About this concert
A near-matchless superstar trio; three of the world’s pre-eminent soloists – Leonidas Kavakos, Yo-Yo Ma and Emanuel Ax – come together as chamber musicians to play all three of Brahms’s Piano Trios.\nFrom the impassioned First to the defiant Third, Brahms’s Trios span his entire creative life: an emotional autobiography that actually increases in concentration and emotional power as it progresses. This superb trio of performers will make powerful advocates.\nBut they’ll bring something more besides: because each member of this super-group is an experienced chamber musician in their own right. They’ve recently recorded this cycle of trios (The Financial Times described their interpretation as ‘golden in its wealth of musicianship’) and three artists of this calibre will bring all their imagination and insight to these three great testaments of a profoundly romantic spirit.

Yo-Yo Ma Biography

Yo-Yo Ma is a world-famous Chinese-American cellist. He is considered one of the best cellists in the world and has made over 50 albums.

He was born to Chinese parents living in Paris. He began to study the cello with his father at age 4 and soon came with his family to New York, where he spent most of his formative years. Later, his principal teacher was Leonard Rose at the Juilliard School. He sought out a traditional liberal arts education to expand upon his conservatory training, graduating from Harvard University in 1976.

Yo-Yo Ma has been called "the most omnivorous of all cellists" by critics and indeed possesses a far more eclectic repertoire than typical for a classical player. He has performed and recorded Baroque pieces on period instruments, American bluegrass music, traditional Chinese melodies, the Argentinian tangos of Astor Piazzolla, Brazilian music, the soundtrack to the film Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and Philip Glass's minimalist score of Naqoyqatsi in addition to numerous recordings of the standard classical repertoire. His latest CD is a collaboration with other musicians for the Memoirs of a Geisha soundtrack.

Nowadays, his main performance instrument is a very fine Montagnana cello from Venice, made in 1733. He also plays regurlarly a Davidoff Stradivarius from 1712.
