About this concert
Since its outset, iconic trio The Bad Plus has dared to be different, challenging all preconceived notions of jazz. Through a provocative style of arrangements and compositions they call “avant-garde populism”, their unique blend of influences, ranging from experimental jazz, indie rock, pop, and classical music has earned this “audacious, rule-breaking jazz trio” (Billboard) a reputation as one of the most universally well-respected bands in jazz today. In 2017, the founding members — bassist Reid Anderson, pianist Ethan Iverson, and drummer David King — will hit the road performing music from the band’s most recent release, It’s Hard.2018 heralds a new and exciting chapter for the band. Anderson and King will be joined by pianist Orrin Evans, whose fresh sound and complementary style will be featured on The Bad Plus’ highly anticipated new album due out that year. Raised in Philadelphia, Evans has led various projects and has recorded and performed with the likes of Christian McBride, Sean Jones, and many more. The BBC summed up the band best when they said, “from album to album, The Bad Plus continues to evolve and improve.” They will never stop doing just that.Reid Anderson: bassOrrin Evans: pianoDave King: drums

Orrin Evans Biography
For more than two decades, pianist/composer Orrin Evans has made an art form of the unexpected. Releasing more than 25 albums without the support of a major label, Evans has become the model of a fiercely independent artist who’s made a habit of rattling the jazz world’s confining cages. That determination has paid off in accolades like topping the “Rising Star Pianist” category in the 2018 DownBeat Critics Poll. His wide-ranging projects span mutable small group settings and the raucous Captain Black Big Band, (nominated for a Grammy in 2019), the nerve-rattling collective trio Tarbaby and the latest twist in his never predictable story, becoming the first new member of The Bad Plus in the trio’s nearly 20-year history. Evans has collaborated with a who’s-who of modern jazz including Nicholas Payton, Sean Jones, Oliver Lake, JD Allen, Christian McBride, Eric Revis, Buster Williams, Karriem Riggins, Nasheet Waits, Kevin Eubanks and Kurt Rosenwinkel, among countless others.
