Emma Morton & the Graces Biography

EMMA MORTON & THE GRACES

★★★★

“The best music on the Italian scene today”
(Ernesto Assante, La Repubblica)

Combining elements of vintage Jazz, homespun Scottish Folk, and earthy Blues, Emma Morton & the Graces transcend these to become an emotionally engaging act that is truly unique and very hard to pigeon-hole - they are shifting musical tradition while exploring social + political themes like immigration, sex, depression + gender.
It is in the live arena that this trio really come into their own. Their performances project a sincerity and passion that is highly infectious, time and again winning over new audiences at very show.

Based in Italy, Emma herself originates from Scotland, and combines her roots with broad influences from her Italian band, blending vocals with a guitar and drum combo (and the optional addition of double bass). Together they’ve done over 120 ticketed shows this 2018 and continue their tour in theatres, clubs, jazz venues and festivals following great success throughout Europe.

VOICE - Emma Morton (Raphael Gualazzi, Gary Lucas, Alejandro Escovedo)
Drums - Piero Perelli (Dana Fuchs, Don Antonio)
Guitar - Luca Giovacchini (Bobby Johnson, Frank Frost, Sam Reed)

Singer-songwriter Emma Morton’s ascendancy through the DIY music scene has seen her work gain increasingly high-profile recognition: beyond the mounting number of live concerts, TV and radio performances over the last few years, Emma has reached over 240K downloads on Spotify and has secured successful publicity syncs and campaigns with Samsung, Enel Energy, PCMC and EXPO, as well as with high-market fashion brands like PI-Quadro, Edda Berg and Sergei Grinko. This year her two film syncs saw success when “We will be Young and Beautiful” was selected at 2018’s Venice Film Festival and won the Soundtrack Stars Award.Collaborations include Olly Murs, Glen Hansard, Gary Lucas , Raphael Gualazzi, Petra Magoni, Alejandro Escovedo and Don Antonio. The Escovedo / Don Antonio record The Crossing will be released in September this year with worldwide distribution.

LIVE

“Emma Morton & the Graces pull you into their evocative and mysterious world full of juxtaposing experiences of love and hate, fear and freedom… Emma’s roaming eyes and deep febrile vocals were charged as though each performance was her last confession. She doesn’t hold back… neither does the band, who in three, thunder and roar as if they were in twenty.” (Moodboard Magazine)

“Energy is the key word” (Italian Music Review)

“A unique psychotropic sound-cocktail fizzing with roots, jazz, soul and folk influences…
exploring controversial stories with an unquestionably captivated audience.” (Volver Magazine)

As performers, Emma Morton & the Graces have definitely been around the block; Live shows are playgrounds for them to push experimentation and a “connection” – feeding off the interplay demanded by each audience’s unique and peculiar energy. The Band; Emma Morton, Piero Perelli, Luca Giovacchini and Gabriele Evangelista (Double bass) have toured worldwide with artists like Dana Fuchs, Vinicio Capossela, Bobby Johnson, R.L. Burnside, Frank Frost, Sam Carr, Pianco C. Reed, Stefano Bollani, Enrico Rava, Maurizio Geri and Francesco Guccini in festivals such as San Javier Jazz (France), Bospop Blues (Germany), Mahindra Blue (India), Smukfest (Denmark), Django Reindhart Festival (France), Maxwell Street Blues Festival (USA), Ethno Jazz Festival (Russia) and Bayfront Blues Festival (USA), Edinburgh Fringe Festival (UK), Shrewsbury Folk Festival (UK).

“…An incredibly refined singer-songwriter who catapults the listener into a celestial yet tangible sonic journey of conflict… all of which is sublimated into well crafted, honest lyrics and raw, liberating songs” (Italian Music Review)

“Sophisticated yet really fucking raw – “Bitten by the Devil” contaminates us with roots, jazz, blues and hints of Scottish folk. Emma’s sublime and untamed vocals unite distant worlds as we journey through her rhythmic rebirth album.” (Prince Faster)

Released in May 2018, the album was independently written and arranged by the band and subsequently picked up by the British label Freshly Squeezed. Positively oozing with guests and collaborators it includes platinum-selling Raphael Gualazzi (piano), Gabriele Evangelista (double bass), Antonio Gramentieri & Grammy Winner Gene Paul.

“Songs like Dirty John and Bitten by the Devil deal directly with the emotional and psychological scars left by the destructive male figures I encountered during my early life. They are in a way, my first rebellion against the defeat I had let myself slip into, against the definition I had allowed others to give me, within these songs I am able to confront the past with strength and knowledge and find my own sense of self, of justice, freedom and beauty.” Emma Morton
