Katie Mullins Biography
Katie Mullins is not your typical singer-songwriter. With a previous career as an opera singer in Berlin, Germany, she has been writing and performing her own brand of modern, haunting folk songs since 2009. On her EP, Three Songs, Mulins takes her glowing overdubbed choruses – made signature on her first two full lengths, Pastoral and Wedding – to another level. With a sound one fan describes as “Joni Mitchell meets Meredith Monk meets Linda Perhacs,” this mini collection of songs, “flowed involuntarily,” says Mullins, “during winter walks from one teaching gig to the next.” They were written following a fallow period of no musical output, owed to a hemorrhaged vocal chord. The unexpected return to music making, although unintended, yielded songs which are anything but trivial. They first of the three songs, “Crocuses,” portrays the stark beauty of an unlikely pairing --- snow on the first flowers of spring – followed by a verse about light coming into the room. The songs on the EP reflect her longing to exists in places that offer silence and solitude, and room for contemplation and perspective. They are the prelude to a full-length release, in the works for 2019, which Mullins plans to “slow release” to fans through a soon-to-be-announced “song of the month” club. But for now, she offers us Three Songs, a brief but lush reintroduction to her sparingly produced songs, and an enticing preview of a dozen more on the way.
