Smooth Edge 2 Biography

Smooth Edge 2 is an a cappella group from Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Formed in 2010, Smooth Edge 2 quickly developed a reputation for their stellar a cappella sound and highly energetic and entertaining live shows. SE2’s roots lie in the vocal jazz tradition of groups like The Manhattan Transfer, Take 6, and Singers Unlimited. With the recent popularity of a cappella music with groups like Pentatonix and Straight No Chaser, TV shows like The Sing Off, and the success of the Pitch Perfect movies, SE2 expanded its repertoire. Today, SE2 performs arrangements of songs ranging from current pop hits to American classics and jazz standards. The group has been featured at a number of public and private events including the Embassy Theatre’s “Summer Nights” series and on WBOI radio’s “Meet the Music”.

Smooth Edge 2 has released three studio albums, “Secret of Christmas”, “We Apologize for Mike”, and their first full-length album “Reflections”, which features favorite songs from their summer and Christmas seasons. SE2 recently announced their fourth album, coming out in the summer of 2020. (Stay tuned for more details.)

The Crew:

Josh Trumm, Bass
Legend has it that Josh could sing before he could talk. Is it true? Who remembers, but that's his story and he's sticking to it. After singing in school and taking piano from a young age, Josh began teaching himself guitar, and eventually began arranging a cappella music for fun. After leading his college a cappella group, Josh spent a few years working in the psychology field before changing careers to focus more on music and the arts.

A native of Boston and Northwest Ohio, Josh arrived in Fort Wayne at the start of 2019. He also enjoys film, cooking, martial arts, and basketball. He always has a slightly inappropriate joke on deck and is currently focused on making his new career and singing with his friends!

Greg O'Keefe, Tenor
Greg sings good, and is learning to do other stuff good too.

He was raised by a family of singing / dancing wolverines in the wilds of Ireland. They taught him how to laugh, how to love, how to sing and dance, and how to track prey over the Irish Moorlands...

...but they didn't teach him how to write bios.

So we made this one up.

Mike Zipse, Baritone
Mike’s resurgence into music was welcomed after many years of focus on work and the activities involved with raising children. As an empty nester, the extra time has allowed him to follow his passion for music and enjoy life with Kay, his wife.......of 40 years in 2020!

Mike grew up in a family of musicians. His mother played the piano by ear while Mike and his two brothers developed a background in piano that expanded to percussion, organ and vocal music.

Mike, one of the 'almost' original members of the group, will celebrate his 10th year with Smooth Edge 2 in 2020. As you would expect, he continues to challenge the youngsters in the group to keep up with the old man!

Mike’s proudest moment in music was the day Smooth Edge 2 performed at his daughter’s wedding.

Jeff Barnett, Tenor
Jeff started singing in church as a kid and followed that passion through high school, and he was eventually ranked third nationwide among high school singers. A vocal scholarship to Baylor University followed, where he studied music education and audio engineering.

Jeff has worked in the music industry ever since. His return to singing was long overdue when he joined Smooth Edge 2 in 2013. His favorite artists include everyone from Samuel Barber to Aerosmith, and from Tower of Power to Gershwin.

Jeff and his wife Brit have six kids and are still trying to figure out where the youngest one’s left shoe is. If you see it, please let him know.

Megan Browning, Soprano
Megan’s musical journey started in grade school when she received her first ever solo in a school musical. Ever since she stepped on that stage, she knew that would be her second home. Megan graduated from Anderson University in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts in Music. Since graduating, Megan has performed on the Fort Wayne Civic Stage & First Presbyterian’s Theatre. She has also been the guest soloist for many church & charity events in the Ft. Wayne area, most notably for past Mad Anthony’s Celebrity Red Coat Dinners, Fort Wayne Women’s Prayer Breakfast, and Vera Bradley Foundations Tickled Pink.

Megan currently teaches private voice lessons at the Sweetwater Academy of Music and helps lead worship for Sunday Gatherings and events held at Fellowship Missionary Church.

Erin Bean, Alto
Music has always been a passion of Erin's ever since she begged her mom for piano lessons and sang in the Kings’ Kids at church as a child. While in high school, Erin immersed herself in choir, concert band, color guard, theatre, and sports. From there she pursued her desire to mold young minds through music education.

Although Erin grew up in Olivet, Michigan, she received her Bachelor's of Music from Huntington University in 2005 and has become a full-blown Hoosier! She is in her 12th year of teaching music and is currently the Angola Middle & High school choir director.

In her free time, Erin loves to play with her nieces and nephew, serve at Pathway Community Church, participate in community theatre, and grab a cup of coffee with friends. She sees Smooth Edge 2 as her singing family and is delighted to make more musical memories together.

Kevin Christenson, Vocal Percussion
Kevin has been involved in music since learning the trumpet at age 9. He attributes his vocal percussion techniques to his long hours of trumpet practice. Kevin attended Indiana University in Bloomington for Music Education and received his bachelor degree from IPFW in 2002. Smooth Edge 2 is his first opportunity to use his strange “beat boxing” talents in a musical group.

Kevin would like to thank his two children Colin and Katelyn for their support and encouragement. Hopefully he won’t spit on anyone and embarrass them!

Sarah Olney, Mezzo-Soprano
“Mezzo” soprano still sounds strange to Sarah since she was trained as a coloratura for 11 years. Sarah trained in opera and musical theater, winning many competitions and placing second at The National Association of Teachers of Singing regional competition. She studied vocal performance for four years at Grace College before continuing her education at Indiana University, where her love for romantic languages ultimately warranted a change in major to French Literature and Linguistics.

Sarah works as a Business Analyst, putting her organizational and analytical skills to good use. She comes home each day to her wonderful husband Dillon and 2 adorable doggos, Watson and Gibs. Keeping home, cooking, gardening… gardening… and some more gardening, leading worship at Headwaters Church, and lots of family keep her nice and busy… relaxing here and there to pick up a good novel, knit, or to study Theology or nutrition. Or watch a Tim Burton/Laika movie. Sarah enjoys the friendship and family that comes with the many activities she is involved in.
