About this concert
Brittany Anjou has explored Ahmad Jamal to Bikini Kill at the piano on three continents, singing quirky protest anthems between roiling original compositions inspired by Bartok, Stravinsky, Red Garland and McCoy Tyner, and now she returns to her hometown from Kuwait via NYC to debut and release her original compositions for jazz trio. It makes great artistic sense that the title of her first major album and the five-part suite contained within is in Esperanto, the “constructed” international language. Just as Anjou’s English-language title Reciprocal Love becomes Enamiĝo Reciprokataj, so too does the mainstream language of the piano jazz she loves get translated into something strikingly different and psychically original. Serious jazz fans will detect familiar influences in what Anjou calls her “inner trio dialogs.” Anjou’s songs, all originals, comment on the art of the trio even as they bask in its glories. With its minimalist repetitions, free-jazz-meets-Rachmaninoff flourishes and electronic framing, there’s a trippy sense of expansiveness in the music. Somehow, her songs are both dreamlike and bracingly wide-awake. Enamiĝo Reciprokataj (Reciprocal Love) is the first of a trio of albums Anjou plans on releasing. This evening will be a specially curated premiere and CD pre-release party, availing the music on physically before the official street date in February on the Seattle-based label, Origin Records. The night features Seattle bassist Evan Flory-Barnes and drummer Matt Jorgensen, with whom Anjou has been playing with on visits home in recent years, as well as special guests. “Hers is a music about music, a jazz about jazz.” – Charles Mudede, The Stranger, Seattle “For someone whose potential is exceedingly hard to keep up with, considering the number of musical forms with which Anjou has experimented, judging her on those terms couldn’t be more rewarding. ” — Lloyd Sachs, Chicago Tribune Reciproka EP - Brittany Anjou Trio: https://brittanyanjou.bandcamp.com/album/brittany-anjou-trio-reciproka-ep Brittany Anjou live at Rockwood Music Hall NYC: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=py6DTTSXu6I

Brittany Anjou Biography

Brittany Anjou is a Brooklyn based composer, vocalist, and piano focused multi-instrumentalist. Exploring everything from Duke Ellington to Bikini Kill in her repertoire, this creative, versatile, and virtuoso performer hails from Seattle and loves being on the road. She has just released the critically acclaimed Enamiĝo Reciprokataj via Origin Records. The album has reached 144 on the Jazz Week Top 300 chart and is getting radio airplay nationally and internationally. Anjou is one of a few to study, record and tour music with godmothers of punk, The Shaggs. She has also had the pleasure of sharing the stage with Wynton Marsalis, Ernestine Anderson, Clark Terry and Elysian Fields. When she isn't playing jazz, she fronts five piece death metal band Bi TYRANT on vocals, songs of which she often circulates into her solo and trio shows as a pianist, keyboardist and vibraphonist. She ties together jazz standards, Shaggs covers, political comedy, and rants about bad psychic dreams, daily anxiety, and forever saving Planned Parenthood.

“Hers is a music about music, a jazz about jazz.” – Charles Mudede, The Stranger, Seattle

Praise for Enamiĝo Reciprokataj:

"While we've barely opened the door to 2019, we already have a serious contender for the year's strongest debut here.”
All About Jazz

"This album, so highly sophisticated with an original jazz perspective, is a roaring introduction that demands attention."
Amazon

"She's happy to lay waste to the instrument when that's what's called for : "Reciprokataj IV: Olive You" begins with a display of power that would mark the summit of most players performances."
Down Beat Magazine

“Anjou’s composition are read as a series of points of view on the art of the trio. It is an anthology of songs both dreamlike and alert, where free-jazz meets Rachmaninoff and electronics.”
France Musique

“Anjou is a virtuosa with a determined touch and nimble liveliness. This accomplished body of work, which took 13 years to be completed, is sufficiently gratifying to make us wonder what her next plans are.”
