About this concert
Dreamers project comes at beauty with a purpose, covering Spanish and Portuguese classics by songwriters (Octavio Paz, Gilberto Gil, Federico García Lorca, and Caetano Veloso among them) who dared to dream under repressive regimes. Transporting arrangements by Jaques Morelenbaum, Diego Schissi, and others amplify the character of everything from Brazilian bossa nova to Iberoamerican folk. Both jazz-adept Herrera and the stylistically omnivorous Brooklyn Rider quartet use deep technique in the service of wonder here: Their fluid phrasing and rhythmic dexterity lift us into the orbits of these visionary songs.

The Mexican-born Herrera sings in Spanish, English and Portuguese. But really, what she does..transcends language. Blending elements from various traditions, she's stretching the very notion of jazz singing, pushing past the diva pleasantries into a sound that's bold, thrilling and effortlessly global.

..Herrera's voice is a genuine jazz instrument. She has great control of her tone, dynamics and attack, and she never uses her control to do anything flashy. She scats in places, but she also sings with ballad sincerity. She invests her singing with emotion and drama, but she also merges her sound directly with the band. She drips with assurance. Magos Herrera is an artist who knows what she wants her music to sound like. And it sounds great.
