About this concert
“Born and raised in Damascus, Maya Youssef was set for a career as a performer before the Syrian war began in 2011. She had defied convention by swapping the violin in preference to the qanun – traditionally, a man’s instrument – and, excelling, had studied in Dubai before coming to the UK on a scholarship that recognizes exceptional talent. At that point, Youssef was studying for a doctorate and working with refugee children on the side. In 2012, a year after war had started, she describes how the music that makes up Syrian Dreams exploded from her. Her first set of compositions, the album is a direct response to anguish and it sets up music as a life-force which is the antithesis of destruction.” – New Internationalist Selv sier hun om albumet: “This album is my personal journey through the 6 years of war in Syria. It is a translation of my memories of home and my feelings into music. I see the act of playing music as the opposite of death; it is a life and hope-affirming act. To me music is a healer and an antidote to what is happening, not only in Syria, but across the whole world. I like to think that my music brings people back to humanity and to their heart centres, where no harm can be done to any form of life and where all can exist together in peace.” Maya Youssef مايا يوسف Biography

Hailed as ‘queen of the qanun’, Maya Youssef is a globally renowned, and award-winning qanun player and composer from Syria. In 2012, Maya arrived in the UK under Tier 1 visa and was endorsed by Arts Council of England as an Exceptional Talent. Since then, Maya have pushed the boundaries of the qanun (a 78 stringed plucked zither traditionally played by men) and performed in South Bank, BBC Proms, Royal Albert Hall, The Barbican, Shakespeare Globe and WOMAD. She collaborated with British cultural Icons like Damon Albarn (Blur/Gorillaz) and recorded for ‘The Beatles & India' documentary in Abbey Road Studios. Her debut album Syrian Dreams (a prayer for peace) was produced by the esteemed Joe Boyd (Nick Drake) and released by Harmonia Mundi. The album received critical acclaim from the media. “Exquisite...a powerful homage, twists Arabic music cliches'', The Guardian. “An album of skill and power...a dizzying sweep of genres from flamenco to jazz. A transportive cinematic listen” The Musician Magazine (The MU). Syrian Dreams won the German Record Critics' Award and Songlines Music Award. This led to many UK and international sold-out concerts. Maya has recently won the PRS Women Make Music Grant and Arts Council Project for the Arts funding towards recording her second album ‘Finding Home’.
