About this concert
"When I'm standing on stage and not singing, what should I do?" Our first inclination is to pick up a shaker or tambourine to keep busy. Great idea. These percussion "toys” are indeed instruments, and there is a proper way to play them. "Percussion for Singers" will show you how to make music and groove with your bandmates. When you can add something extra to make the band sound better, you add value to yourself as a pro singer. Bandleaders will take notice and appreciate it, too! In this workshop, you will learn: *How to analyze songs and tempos *Recognizing when there is a need for percussion *Choosing the appropriate instrument to play *Basic rhythm patterns for each instrument *Microphone awareness *Appropriate use in rock band versus acoustic settings. This class is specially designed for live performers interested in learning the basics of hand percussion for rock and pop bands. The class teaches very simple, yet effective techniques in playing hand percussion instruments (tambourine, shaker, cowbell, guiro, etc) . Led by Felice Hernandez , assisted by Celia Chavez

Celia Chavez Music Biography

Celia Chavez takes a new solo moniker, Babilonia, to celebrate her new five-song EP titled "If I Ever Think To Double Back". Following over a decade of steady touring and recording with Enrique Iglesias, P!nk, Melody Gardot, Julia Fordham, reggae legend Burning Spear and her original acoustic duo Petty Chavez, her new moniker Babilonia presents Chavez clearly as a skilled, compelling singer-songwriter claiming her place at the front of her own formidable band.

Chavez braids together strands of music she's lived and loved — her parents’ jazz and soul records in Seattle, her hometown; the indie electricity of New York City’s Lower East Side and Brooklyn; the songcraft of Laurel Canyon in Los Angeles (where she now resides).

The name Babilonia (her grandmaternal surname) has always held mystique for Chavez, along with its origin linked to the city of Babel, where legend says the peoples of the world were scattered and human speech fractured into many languages. “This project calls home and harmonizes all the voices I have summoned while in service to so many distinctive artists. Babilonia contains my vulnerability and power, joy and imperfection. She gives me a new creative center, a fresh universe to expand into.”

With fresh perspective and courage gained while grounded at home in the years following 2020, Chavez found guidance with producer Jeremy Little. Together they found a sonic, lyrical language toIf I Ever Think… resist melancholy, embrace the bittersweet and become, song by song, an arrival at wholeness and peace.
