About this concert
MassOpera (formerly MetroWest Opera) is thrilled to present its first ever New Opera Workshop of composer Kamala Sankaram and librettist Jerre Dye's Taking Up Serpents. This one-hour opera is an exploration of faith both as it relates to religion and family, told through the lens of three family members in a snake-handling Pentecostal church. This workshop performance is in collaboration with Washington National Opera in preparation for their world premiere performance at the Kennedy Center in January 2019

Laura Intravia Biography

Performer, composer and arranger Laura Intravia is internationally renowned for her multi-faceted musical career in opera, concert music and video game and film soundtracks. A coloratura soprano with “bright ping,” her affinity for contemporary music has led to roles such as Amy in Little Women (MetroWest Opera) Leonora in The Beautiful Bridegroom (MWO), quintet soprano in Song from the Uproar (Beth Morrison Projects) and world premiere of the role Young Iphis in The Body Politic (Juventas New Music Ensemble). In addition to her voice, Laura's flute and Electronic Wind Instrument have been heard on the Video Games Live international tour, appearing as a soloist since 2009. She has also performed as a solo vocalist on the Pokemon: Symphonic Evolutions national tour, and made her Madison Square Garden debut with the concert in 2015.

Equally at home in the recording studio, Laura has recorded for video game soundtracks across a myriad of styles. Her solo soprano vocals can be heard in blockbuster hits such as Destiny 2, Destiny and ReCore, as well as pop-inspired vocals in Tekken Tag Tournament 2. Her classical, jazz and ethnic flutes have been featured in games such as Mages of Mystralia, Cornerstone: Song of Tyrim, Otomedius Excellent and Dragonvale.

An avid composer and arranger, Laura has won several awards for her works, including the Jack Downey Vocal Composition Prize, 2nd place in the New York Treble Singers Composition Competition, and two G.A.N.G. award nominations for Best Cover Remix. Her piano arrangements of Austin Wintory's Grammy-nominated score to Journey were published by Alfred Music in 2013. Laura has arranged and orchestrated several pieces on the Video Games Live albums and concert series, and has released two solo piano video game arrangement albums featuring pianist Brendon Shapiro (Through Time and Space and Shall We Play).

Born and raised on Long Island, Laura is a graduate of Ithaca College with degrees in Composition and Vocal Performance, where she was awarded the Philip J. Lang Scholarship and Hockett Composition Scholarship. She frequently appears on Overclocked Podcast with her segment “Between the Lines,” a podcast discussing music theory in the context of well-known video game music.
