About this concert
From the folk and gospel-influenced songs that reflect the sentiments of the 1963 Civil Rights Movement to the hip-hop anthems recognizing that Black Lives Matter, music has always supported and strengthened outcries for social justice. Created by the brilliant minds of Soul Science Lab, Soundtrack '63 is a live, multimedia musical performance that traces the African American experience from before the Middle Passage to the present Black Lives Matter movement. Archival video footage, animation, and narration are combined with a live soundtrack of spirituals, protest songs, and popular music performed by an 11-piece orchestra and dynamic vocal ensemble. For more information on Soundtrack '63, visit, visit https://www.soundtrack63.com. Suggested for ages: Ages 12+. Note: This presentation is a demo performance of the full length production; orchestral ensemble and run time are abbreviated (30 min shorter) to meet the scheduling needs of the student audience.

Soul Science Lab Biography

Innovative. Afro. Futuristic. Griots. Soul Science Lab (SSL), is a Brooklyn, NY based music and multimedia duo that translates stories into soul stirring sounds and dynamic visuals. SSL was formed by artist, educator and creative director, Chen Lo, and multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer, Asante’ Amin. With a focus on high quality, timeless music, SSL designs innovative arts education models and creates culturally responsive interactive experiences. In addition to international touring, SSL’s current projects include Chen Lo’s album "Footprints", Amin’s album "The Visitor: Alter Destiny",  the orchestral, interactive documentary "Soundtrack ‘63" and their newly released interactive album, "Plan for Paradise".

Most recently, the duo was featured in TheRoot.com’s Black History Month series and VICE.com's publication, The Creators, for their 360 degree video, "I Can't Breathe". With several performances under their belt in the last year, including Ghana festival Chale Wote, Sankofa.org's Many Rivers to Cross Festival, BAM Café, 2017 SXSWedu closing party and Lincoln Center Education, Soul Science Lab is currently performing music from their 2016 debut album Plan for Paradise at concerts and festivals nationwide.

Offbeat Magazine calls Plan for Paradise “likely the most eclectic hip-hop record out this year.”
