About this concert
Join us to celebrate the transformation of the Helen Betty Osborne building! In conjunction with artist Kenneth Lavallee and Synonym Art Consultation, The University of Winnipeg’s Helen Betty Osborne building is being wrapped in a Star Blanket. The Star Blanket project has sites across the city and is a project that honours those impacted by Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two Spirit peoples. The Helen Betty Osborne Building is home to some of The University of Winnipeg’s most innovative and accessible education and community learning programs. By wrapping the building in a Star Blanket we are also acknowledging the deep impact of these programs on our neighborhood and communities. There will be a free BBQ and performances by Boogey The Beat and Studio 393. This project is a part of Synonym Art Consultation's Wall-to-Wall festival, a mural and culture festival that takes place in Winnipeg every year from September 1-30. It sees the creation of multiple indoor and outdoor murals across the city and celebrates each new work of art with unique events. Synonym Art Consultation is a curatorial collective based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, committed to providing meaningful employment and mentorship opportunities to artists and to facilitate the celebration of art and culture with unique, inclusive, community-minded events that serve as safer spaces for diverse populations. Location: 511 Ellice Avenue — in the parking lot behind the Helen Betty Osborne Building

Boogey The Beat Biography

For years Anishinaabe DJ and producer Les Boulanger — known by audiences as Boogey the Beat — has toiled behind the scenes, laying the sonic foundations for other musicians’ anthems. As a longtime lover of hip-hop and rap, collaboration is his comfort zone. He’s worked with the likes of The Halluci Nation (formerly a Tribe Called Red) and Snotty Nose Rez Kids, playing stages across Turtle Island.

In homage to the sounds of a sundance, Boogey builds each song around a percussive heartbeat, then adds vocals and other instruments, letting the drum lead the way. He remembers walking up to one of his first childhood pow wows and hearing the big drum, a guiding force that stays with him today.

While he hopes his music will resonate with revellers from all walks of life, he beams at the thought of Indigenous youth hearing pow wow and sundance songs for the first time at one of his shows.

“It’s important to not forget that at one time it was illegal for us to sing these songs, play these drums, and go to these ceremonies,” he says. “Now it’s a time for celebration, and for us to take over the main stage.”
