About this concert
Wavelength Winds is the University of Maryland’s premier fellowship wind quintet. This ensemble commissions new works, creates innovative projects, and engages in collaborations that put classical music in a culturally relevant context. This year Wavelength Winds co-commissioned a new quintet by John Steinmetz, a work for which they have exclusive performing and recording rights for a year. A total of four new commissions will be featured on this recital. The group collaborates with local DC hip-hop/rap artist Konshens the MC in an ongoing project called “Classically Dope.” This fusion of hip-hop/rap and classical music bridges the gap between these two performing worlds, bringing communities together in a never-before-heard fashion. The Classically Dope collaboration has been featured by Circa Media, One Love Massive, the DC Office of Cable Television, Film, Music & Entertainment, Emancipation Day at Freedom Plaza, and NextNOW Fest. Additionally, this fall Wavelength Winds and Avant Projekts recorded The Prick of the Spindle, a classical music video based on the tale of Sleeping Beauty. A synergy of music, dance, and film, the video was released this month for free on social media to connect with modern audiences on the digital concert stage. Projects such as these are made possible by the generous support and contributions of the University of Maryland/The Clarice, collaborative artists, and patrons. Contact us if you’d like to sponsor a project or collaborate with us!
