The Lucky Losers, San Francisco’s finest male/female duet fronted band, deliver an inventive, hypnotic spin on 60’s blues and roots music. Cathy Lemons and Phil Berkowitz breathe new life into American songwriting tradition and the vanishing art of duet singing. The stark contrast between Lemons’ velvet voice with gritty edge and Berkowitz’ elegant tenor makes for an electrifying performance. Their first album, “A Winning Hand” received international attention from critics and made The Roots Music Report’s “Top 50 Blues Albums of 2015.” Their second album, “In Any Town,” made Making a Scene’s “Top Independent Blues Albums of 2016” list plus the indie king nominated them for five Independent Blues Music Awards (two in 2017, an three in 2018). They have been nominated for “Best Traditional Album / 2015,” “Best Contemporary Album /2016” and “Best Harmonica Player/ 2016” by Blues 411. Critics from Rolling Stone to Living Blues have given this songwriting/singing team a huge thumbs up. They just completed a 26 venue/15 state tour in April/May of 2018, travelling to the Southwest, the Midwest, and the Southern parts of the United States. They are embarking on a 6th national tour in the Fall of 2018. New Album “Blind Spot” In 2018, Cathy and Phil continue their winning streak with Kid Andersen, and have released their 3rd album, “Blind Spot.” The album is solely comprised of original material created by Cathy and Phil alongside their multi-talented songwriting partner, Danny Caron (Charles Brown). “Blind Spot” features scintillating musical contributions from six-time Blues Music Award-nominated guitarist, Kid Andersen, IBMA Momentum Award-winning violinist Annie Staninec (Rod Stewart), 2018 BMA nominated saxophonist, Nancy Wright, and Laura Chavez (Nikki Hill), who made the “Top 50 Sensational Female Guitarists” list in Guitar Player Magazine. A Bit of Individualized History: Cathy Lemons, originally from Dallas, Texas, has been described as “the finest light skinned blues singer in the U.S.!” by Real Blues. Cathy has mesmerized audiences for over 25 years and has performed with some of the greatest names in blues, including John Lee Hooker, and Tommy Castro. She has three albums to her credit: Dark Road (2000), Lemonace (Vizztone – 2010) and Black Crow (Vizztone -2014), which was listed by Blues Matters in the U.K. as one of the “Top 10 Blues Album of 2014.” Z New Jersey native, Phil Berkowitz, has been described as a “Top-flight blues singer/harmonica player” (San Jose Mercury News). Phil has brought his energetic and refined musical style to American audiences for over 20 years. He has produced two critically-acclaimed albums: Louis’ Blues (2005) and All Night Party (2009). Phil has collaborated with a range of premiere musicians, such as 2011 International Blues Challenge winner Sean Carney, 2014 IBC winner for “Best Guitar” Ben Rice, Duke Robillard, Billy Branch, and most notably, Charles Brown’s former bandleader and guitarist, Danny Caron, with whom he currently co-writes his songs. The eleven original compositions go far beyond virtuosity and great humor and turn the album into something which brings absolute, timeless fun. Music loving people will find this album very dear to the heart. (5 ½ star rating out of 6.)” Blues News Germany/ Issue # 92/June 2018
