Leland Sundries Biography

Hi friend -

My band Leland Sundries is putting out a new EP (our third, after a full-length) on July 5, 2019. It’s a return to Americana music. This band has survived Nick having heart surgery, getting sober, moving to Memphis, and a few different lineups. Recorded in Brooklyn and Queens before the move, the EP features a tongue-in-cheek Telecaster jam (“Food Court Blues”), a song about drinking inspired by an offhand Todd Snider comment (“If You’re Gonna Drive, I’m Gonna Drink”), a true tale of a wild early aviator (“The Ballad of Wiley Post & Will Rogers”), a song about being worried about an ex (who really did have a Replacements tattoo; this song alludes to the Memphis move), and a cowpunk version of an old cowboy song I heard from the Down Hill Strugglers at the Brooklyn Folk Festival (“Lone Prairie”). I’m pretty proud of how it turned out. I’m glad to put it in your hand now.

Last year was a big one for us, with opening dates for Low Cut Connie and Peter Mulvey and doing a Paste session. For the new EP, we’ve earned praise from Glide and Cowboys & Indians Mag.

Next up after this will be an original rocker (not Americana!) and a Memphis punk rock cover of an R&B hit (release dates TBA) after we get back from the road.

What we’ve read:

“Leland Sundries, a band from New York led by Nick Loss-Eaton, is dedicated to storytelling in a way that recalls Woody Guthrie and his Folkways brethren. [Their] scrappy Americana will get you longing for empty two-lane highways and kudzu-encased back porches.”
- New York Times

“A-… genius.”

“Heaps of wit and melody… Beautiful rambling storytelling that flirts with pop and sounds a little like Silver Jews.”
- UNCUT

“Scrappy yet ingenuous rock poetry.”
- MOJO

“Loss-Eaton and company avoid predictability… Those prone to coloring outside the lines will have cause to give a decided nod of approval.”
- Relix

"One of the more exciting roots-based bands to be unleashed in quite a while... This fellow knows his geography now. Both out in the rolling hills and inside his own heart and soul... there isn’t a genre they haven’t mastered. These guys have only one rule about the music they play: it has to sound authentic and cool. Which, a good damn portion of the time, it does."
- American Songwriter

“Awesomeness.”
- Pop Matters

"A killer record... The record has devoured my subconscious... creative wordplay... Witty and left of center, juxtapose from the norm, some fresh and fun genre-bending rock-n-roll...Loss-Eaton is a songwriter’s songwriter, languid stories and never short on style... A tried and true summer soundtrack for yours truly, simply a record you can’t grow not fond of. Each track a small ride to a cool destination."
- No Depression
