Deer Head Inn

Ms McKay is a personable, friendly and talented entertainer. Alexi David and Tim Carbone are perfect accompanists. The Deer Head Inn is a fine, intimate venue. A little jazz gem in the Poconos. And the place was filled to capacity. Nellie’s mix of jazz, classic rock and original material works quite well. She engages the audience, takes requests and pulls the audience together. It really isn’t a surprise that she did a Doris Day tribute album. Six stars.

You always have a great time watching and listening to Gabrielle Stravelli perform.

Gabrielle Stravelli is a phenomenal artist. That's not just my opinion. Read her reviews in various publications including the NY Times. We saw her at the Deer Head Inn and she was great. She performed two sets and every song was a gem. The venue is an intimate place with a relaxed vibe. The food is good and reasonably priced and with a very welcoming staff. No wonder it's the oldest,continually open Jazz venue in the country.

Ms McKay’s musical knowledge and skill are extensive. Her charming and friendly personality only add to the enjoyment of the audience. The Deer Head Inn is the perfect venue for her. She easily draws the crowd into joining in a repeated chorus or—-and it made sense at the time—making barnyard sounds. Her bass and violin accompaniment was first rate, both keeping time and weaving and integrating various asides and also blending well with Ms McKay’s voice, piano, harmonica and ukulele. And they did some sweet soloing. That Nellie would perform in costume (a cow and a vampire) showed her sense of fun and warmth. She will take requests, and her catalog of both classic rock, pop and jazz numbers keeps expanding., the genres often blending. With the audience returning the warmth and enthusiasm, it seemed a family affair. Top rate too were those attending to tickets and seating and the crew waiting tables and tending bar. Good menu! Even if you would have to travel a ways to visit, The Deer Head Inn will always be worth the trip. And it is always a delight to attend a Nellie McKay performance.

Nellie McKay May just be the friendliest, kindest, warmest, sunniest performer ever . She has mastered many styles; she has her own material along with the standards—and even some classic rock. Her rapport with the audience is fine and fun.
