Stéphane Mottoul Biografie

Stéphane Mottoul - Hof and Stiftsorganist - Conductor

Distinguished improviser and talented performer, Stéphane graduated from the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Stuttgart and the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse in Paris, studying under esteemed teachers such as Ludger Lohmann (organ), Pierre Pincemaille, Thierry Escaich, and Laszlo Fassang (organ improvisation), as well as Jean-François Zygel and Yves Henry (harmony, counterpoint, fugue). Stéphane furthered his education with a Master's degree in church music from the Musikhochschule in Freiburg-im-Breisgau, Germany, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists (UK).

In addition to his talents as an organist, Stéphane is also developing his skills as a conductor under the direction of Hansjörg Albrecht and the guidance of Guy van Waas.

Renowned for his imaginative use of registrations and organ techniques (Music Web International, 2018), Stéphane has earned numerous prizes in various organ competitions. Notably, he received the First Prize and the Public Prize in organ improvisation and the Third Prize in organ interpretation at the Dudelange International Organ Competition.
He was also honoured with the prestigious Hubert Schoonbroodt Prize for excellence in organ playing in Belgium.

As a soloist, Stéphane performs regularly across Europe and North America. Prominent venues include Brussels Cathedral, the Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels, Liège Philharmony, and the Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal, Canada.

Stéphane's extensive and eclectic repertoire spans from the Early Baroque to the 21st Century. He explores the organ in all its states, both in silent film improvisation and with orchestra. ( Sturm und Klang, Century 21st, Luzerner Symphonieorchester)

His debut recording, 'Maurice Duruflé: Complete Organ Works' (Aeolus, 2017), has been received with critical acclaim worldwide.

In October 2021, Stéphane was appointed Organist at the Hofkirche St. Leodegar in Lucerne, Switzerland. He has since completed several major projects showcasing the Hofkirche's monumental organ. These include the complete works of J.S. Bach in 14 concerts in 2022, the major works of the Romantic repertoire in 2023, followed in 2024 by the organ works of Louis Vierne, and concerts as a conductor under the "Musik am Hof" label.
