TOTA is the obtuse diminutive of Jónatas, which emerged as naturally as the homonymous project. It stems from a need for authentic expression and serves as a creative refuge that school did not allow. With curiosity as the active principle and skepticism towards what lies on the surface, the songs are always a way to get to know oneself, sometimes enigmatic, other times diaphanous, and, if available, clear and ethereal. TOTA follows in the tradition of troubadours, a pilgrim yet wholesome.

TOTA belongs to the lineage of singer-songwriters but doesn't force that label or try to fit into that box. Doesn't take sides or believe in reality as black and white. Although left-handed, he has no sides in thought; and even with a higher degree in Musical Composition, the distinction between so-called high and low culture is perfectly irrelevant.

TOTA prioritizes empathy with others and the experience of the world, in what can be most ineffable. Read in a book by Umberto Eco that one should not play the role of the solitary genius. Aware of this, TOTA does not claim to dictate nature’s rules but relies on its uniqueness, its way of looking at things, and promises to bring unique perspectives to the Portuguese music scene.

TOTA regularly collaborates as a musician and lyricist with EU.CLIDES and is preparing to release his debut album later this year.
