When I first decided I truly wanted to try to be a real musician, a real singer-songwriter, and it felt realistic at least in principle, at least semi-attainable, I set out to book gigs in towns around the western United States that had awesome music festivals that they hosted. This really began kinda for real in 2016. I made a two year plan to quit my job, and nailed that. In my travels, I met Janis and her family out in Wallowa county. It was my favorite region to tour through and I really really wanted to get into Juniper Jam. But it’s not the kind of thing you can really apply for, realistically. So I toured out there from 2016 and on, twice a year, solo and with a band, and tried to get to know everyone. Unfortunately, I sucked at Music, and Performance. But I got better, apparently. At long last, after touring with her son Joey and even winning an award in Arizona in 2022, she came up to me after a show out there and said to me, Chris, enough people have been asking why you are not playing Juniper Jam in 2023 that I think you should maybe mark your calendar for 8/31/24…I’ll get you a slot.
