About this concert
Pylon Reenactment Society It's easier to explain what Pylon Reenactment Society isn’t than what it actually is. It’s not a continuation or a reunion, because Vanessa is the only member in both groups. It’s neither a tribute act nor a cover band, although they do perform Pylon songs. Led by Vanessa Briscoe Hay of the legendary post-punk band Pylon, Pylon Reenactment Society also features Jason NeSmith and Kay Stanton (Supercluster, Casper & The Cookies) and Gregory Sanders (Casper & The Cookies). Their debut album ‘Magnet Factory’ and live performances have been met with critical acclaim. Uncut Magazine awarded the album an 8/10 rating, saying “Magnet Factory finds the quartet in scintillating form, shifting smartly between angular noise-pop and nervy punk-funk, topped with Hay’s spiky vocals… a terrific debut from American post-punk veterans.” The Associated Press said, “...Briscoe Hay remains a distinctive, boundary-defying songwriter… Amid the algorithm-driven din that now fills earbuds, ‘Magnet Factory’ sounds as fresh as Pylon first did…the band is an irresistible blend of simplicity and synchronicity, the music both edgy and therapeutic.” Rolling Stone Magazine noted of their performance at SXSW 2024 “…Pylon Reenactment Society dodges nostalgia partially because Pylon was hardwired for the future…” Pylon Reenactment Society have supported the release of ‘Magnet Factory’ by going on whirlwind tours of the west coast and mid Atlantic states—which included opening for Teenage Fanclub on their first U.S. tour date. Current plans include continuing to perform select US dates in support of the album which has charted on the NACC Top 200 Chart peaking at #62. Small Reactions Small Reactions is an indie pop band based in Atlanta, known and loved throughout the local scene since their beginning in 2011. “City Lights” heard from guitarist and vocalist Scotty Hoffman, who explained the band’s philosophy of honoring pop music while expanding its definition. Hoffman says, “What we try to do with our songs is push melody, and push the parameters of that song as far as it can go before we’re all like, ‘Is this still a pop song? Is this too noisy? Has this turned into something else?’” Their new album is called “New Age Soul,” with a title track originally inspired by “Cool Blue Flame,” a recurring DJ show on the West Texas station WFMU, cited by Hoffman. Go Public Flagpole Magazines Gordon Lamb has this to say “The new self-titled EP from Go Public is out now. This is a legitimate Athens supergroup composed of Jay Domingo (The Dignity of Labor), Adrian Finch and SA Rawls (each of Masters of the Hemisphere and then Elf Power and Still Flyin’, respectively), and Sam Gunn (Iron Hero). And what they’ve made is, indeed, super. The seven songs here are so completely representative of the band’s chosen aesthetic and sound—heavily rhythmic and propulsive, aggressive post-punk—that it’s almost as if the past 40 years never happened. It’s a nearly perfect marriage between everything that was ever loved about A Certain Ratio and pre-1986 Public Image Ltd. Each song is so stupendously composed, arranged and performed, I can’t even be bothered to recommend specific ones. There is, however, something of an Easter egg available to careful listeners. Knowing these dudes’ pedigrees and ages, no one will ever convince me that the horn riff in “Fresh Neg” isn’t an interpolation of the vocal melody from Genesis’ “That’s All.” Find this as quickly as you can over at gopublic.bandcamp.com.”

Pylon Reenactment Society Biography

PYLON REENACTMENT SOCIETY:

More than a tribute band. Pylon Reenactment Society have written new songs with Pylon as their guiding star. PRS have delighted old Pylon fans while making new ones. The band features original Pylon vocalist Vanessa Briscoe Hay, guitarist Jason NeSmith, bassist Kay Stanton and drummer Gregory Sanders.

Kay and Jason previously worked with Vanessa on the recording project Supercluster. Gregory was a member of Casper & the Cookies with Jason & Kay. Audio engineer Jason NeSmith was a co-producer for ‘Pylon Box’ along with Vanessa Briscoe Hay, Michael Lachowski and Henry Owings. He restored and remastered all the tracks. He is also known for mastering ‘Trouble No More’ the 50th Anniversary collection for The Allman Brothers for producer Bill Levenson.

PRS was formed in 2014 to play a few Pylon songs for a one-off show as part of an arts retrospective exhibit named Art Rocks Athens— appropriate as the members of Pylon had been art majors at UGA. Vanessa decided to call the project Pylon Reenactment Society— an inside joke among the original band members when they were relearning their material in the early 2000s. The Art Rocks Athens show was enthusiastically received. Encouraged, and with the surviving Pylon members’ blessings, Pylon Reenactment Society became a real band.

PRS have been lucky to share the stage with Fred Schneider, Dressy Bessy, Cindy Wilson, 75 Dollar Bill, KAG of Priests, Chandra, Bongos, Gang of Four and The Smithereens. Requests for shows around the country and overseas came in. What had started as a one-off project, has now wowed both long-time fans who thought they would never get to see this music performed live—as well as younger fans who have just discovered Pylon.. The positive feedback provided impetus to keep moving forward and to write fresh material in the spirit of Pylon.

Since 2015 the band has released a 12” EP, a 7” single, a Bandcamp single, and three music videos. They are currently in the process of recording their first full length album. Past festival and concert series appearances include Part Time Punks, Savannah Stopover, Sarasota Film Fest, U+N Fest, Barely Human Fest, Irrelevant Festival, Athens Popfest, Westobou, and Primavera Sound 19. A live concert was filmed in January 2019 for Athens Inside-Out 2: Red Turns Into Blue—a new documentary co-directed by Bill Cody and Tony Brazier which is now available on DVD, streaming services and for limited theater screenings.
