FREQz Biography
REQz (pronounced like "frequencies"), the dynamic indie rock band hailing from Oakland, California, is excited to announce their debut album, Grizzly Peak, which will be released on vinyl and digitally on June 7, 2024.
Formed in the summer of 2021, FREQz comprises four best friends: Nelda (of Extra! Extra!), JaMile (of W.O.E.), Alisa (of Cave Clove), and Harry (of Lagos Roots). Their music, characterized by pulsating rhythms and a blend of climactic rock with intricate electronics and loops, offers a captivating sonic experience that ranges from atmospheric to rebellious. Their electrifying live performances have earned them a reputation for delivering gripping, sexy, and dramatic shows.
Unique to FREQz’s process, they listened to hours of recordings in the warmth of a wood-fired hot tub, cherry-picking their favorite moments, and then formalizing them into structured compositions. After releasing these songs as a series of singles, FREQz is set to unleash the full-length version of Grizzly Peak in June.
Grizzly Peak pays homage to the famous Oakland make-out spot overlooking the Bay Area. Many of Nelda’s poignant lyrics on the album reflect on her experiences navigating the tumultuous waters of dating life. The album kicks off with the dreamy groove of "All of the Days," a track that encapsulates the theme of seeking connection amidst the chaos of life.
From polyrhythmic bangers like “Hang your Hat on Me” to electronic dance tracks such as “Clover,” and rock ballads like “Lake Chalet” and the eponymous “Grizzly Peak,” the album offers a diverse sonic landscape influenced by artists ranging from Radiohead to Flying Lotus to Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Each track is meticulously crafted to maximize raw intensity and emotional depth. Grizzly Peak feels like a time capsule of this era, while also pushing the boundaries of contemporary rock music.
