Über Doug MacLeod

Doug MacLeod
Doug MacLeod is an internationally acclaimed blues singer/songwriter, guitarist, and storyteller whose soulful vocals, masterful guitar work, and unforgettable live performances have made him one of the most respected voices in acoustic blues today.
“Like all great blues men, MacLeod lives his music—the songs are one with his being.” — Blues Music Magazine “One of the great blues artists…period!” — Jorma Kaukonen “One of the last truly iconic blues songwriters of our time.” — Macallé Blues (Italy)
The 2026 Blues Music Awards Acoustic Album of the Year winner for Between Somewhere and Goodbye, MacLeod is known for songs that bring deeply human characters to life with honesty, wit, and soul.
A nine-time Blues Music Awards winner, Doug MacLeod was named Acoustic Artist of the Year in 2023, with Raw Blues 1 winning Acoustic Album of the Year in 2024 and Between Somewhere and Goodbye earning the honor again in 2026. His albums A Soul to Claim (produced by Jim Gaines) and Between Somewhere and Goodbye (produced by Andreas Werner) were named Albums of the Year by DownBeat in 2022 and 2025.
Over a career spanning more than 40 years and 29 albums, MacLeod has worked alongside blues legends including George 'Harmonica' Smith, Big Joe Turner, Big Mama Thornton, Lowell Fulson, and Pee Wee Crayton. His songs have been recorded by Albert King, Albert Collins, Joe Louis Walker, and Eva Cassidy, and featured in film, television, and theater.
From 1999–2004, he hosted Nothin’ But the Blues on Los Angeles radio station KKJZ, served as the voice of Continental Airlines’ Blues Showcase, and wrote the long-running column Doug’s Back Porch for Blues Revue. He also appears in the documentary Resonate: A Guitar Story—The Making of National Guitars.
Overcoming childhood abuse and a severe stutter, MacLeod found his voice through the blues, learning directly from the masters and carrying their tradition forward with authenticity and heart. As his mentor Ernest Banks taught him: “Never play a note you don’t believe, and never write or sing about what you don’t know.”
As Esther Crayton once told him, “You have a message—and you’ll send it mainly to the people who don’t go to church.”
Amen.
