Los Cenzontles has explored Mexican roots music for almost 30 years in California and beyond. This group of local artists, trained at its San Pablo, CA community center, pioneered the Fandango Jarocho revival in California, revived the traditional string mariachi and has created a unique approach to the Pirekua from Michoacan through its collaborations with master elder artists from Mexico. They have also created new hybrids through their many cross cultural collaborations. Their use of traditional Mexican forms such as corridos and sones provide a form for expressing vital themes in their community. Their cultural center trains community youth in music, dance, arts and crafts. Their production company released numerous CDs, documentaries and digital media. They also provide cultural consultation and performances to communities statewide.
