In a dusty desert town at the edge of the Mojave Desert lives LANDROID, a two-piece whose sound evolved after their move from Los Angeles to Landers, CA, a small community near Joshua Tree. The band takes their name from the place they now call home.

Singer and bassist/guitarist, Cooper Gillespie, and drummer, Greg Gordon, visited Joshua Tree to record an album with another project several years ago. A couple years later, they made a trip to Pioneertown to see the Pixies play at Pappy and Harriet’s.

“It was on the Pixies trip that we really felt like we needed to move to the desert,” says Gordon, “The Mojave called to us, and we had to answer. There was no plan. We just did it.”

After a couple years of living in the desert, the duo wrote the songs that would ultimately become their debut album, Imperial Dunes. It was tracked with Josiah Mazzaschi (The Jesus & Mary Chain, Deap Vally, Built To Spill) at his Cave Studio.

“The songs on this album are partially about relocating from Los Angeles to a “town” with a population of 2,632 people. We have so much space now—physically and mentally. You can hear it in the music,” Gillespie remarks.

LANDROID’s music shifts between lush, Lynchian dreamscapes and stark realities. It is infused with the passing of clouds, the smell of rain-soaked creosote bushes, and the whispers of nearby mountains. Their corner of the Mojave Desert is a strange, lonesome place pulsating with an energy not entirely of this world. They spend their nights gazing at skies dripping with stars while receiving transmissions from beyond the Milky Way. Some of those intergalactic frequencies end up in their retro-futuristic songs.
