About FSQ

FSQ Back Story and Quick Bio 2020

Funk Style Quality aka FSQ is a six person production team. A young DJ and hip-hop / house head Sa'd “The Hourchild” Ali and an even younger funk fan Chuck Da Fonk Fishman, met in the mid 1990s as touring members of George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic (P-Funk), with Sa'd himself being Dr Funkenstein's nephew.

After a deep brainstorm to find new ways to reinvent themselves for the dance music world, Chuck and Sa'd brought Soul Clap, George Clinton and Sly Stone together for a legendary 2013 collaboration at Red Bull Studios Los Angeles. Also instrumental in that historic recording session was 8 time Grammy nominated producer G Koop. The trio - Chuck, Sa'd and G Koop then became FSQ - a production team committed to creating original funk music, across various styles (northern soul, disco, house music) with supreme quality. FSQ formed under the auspices of this P-Funk / E-Funk project.

Then later in 2013, they brought on Chas Bronz, a Boston based Soul Clap acolyte and guitar hero, and One Era, a Philadelphia based multi instrumentalist and producer, to round out the FSQ team.

Soul Clap launched the group in 2014 with the FSQ debut EP, “Zulu Congo Call” which got 9/10 in Mixmag and DJ Mag. FSQ remix work for other artists can be found across a variety of labels — Midnight Riot Records, ULTRA Music, Boogie Angst, Jalapeno Records, Wolf + Lamb, Bastard Jazz, BBE and many other dance music indies.

Sa’d “The Hourchild” Ali unfortunately passed away in the early summer of 2018. “The Remix Special” an album compilation of unreleased FSQ remixes of their Soul Clap Records label mates was released in Sa’d’s honor with all proceeds going to his family. Morgan Wiley, from Midnight Magic, was finding himself more and more involved in New York City audio engineering and production work for FSQ, joined the group about this time.

FSQ serves up a fresh taste of funk on their 2020 album "Reprise Tonight". Forthcoming on Soul Clap Records, the album features guest appearances by George Clinton & Parliament-Funkadelic, Nona Hendryx, Fonda Rae, Denise King, and Dolette McDonald.

FSQ DJ sets draw upon on their extensive catalog of remix and original productions and quality dance music across a variety of styles including funk, disco, house, northern soul, and their own brand of Sly and Robbie influenced new wave, dubbed “Caribbean Disco”. Today FSQ members Chuck Da Fonk and Chas Bronz carry the DJ torch for Sa’d Ali, who began in his career 1977 as a disco soul DJ.

FSQ also performs their productions live with their rhythm section - The Supreme Qualities - aka The SQ's.
