About The Crow and the Canary

Raised on Motown and 80’s pop in Suburban Detroit, Nikki was naturally drawn to melodies. She taught herself to read music and began playing the piano at age 6, until not two years later, she found her voice in theatre amongst the warm grandeur of the stage. Later she tried her hand in a multitude of instruments: from the flute, piccolo and french horn, to percussion and the weightless grace of the harp. In high school, she began classical training in the instrument she preferred above all: her voice. From musicals and operas, to Interlochen Center for the Arts, she immersed herself in every musical endeavor she could find. She attended Columbia College Chicago and received her BA in audio engineering for film, teaching herself new instruments in her spare time. At age 22, she headed West to Los Angeles. Pursuing a career in film post-production, her musical avocations were reduced to recording covers on the weekends by layering instruments and vocals in her bedroom. Her influences include: Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, Billy Joel, and Chopin Less than an hour away from Nikki in a nearby Detroit Suburb, Mike found his voice quite a bit sooner at the ripe age of 6. Having dabbled in a plethora of artistic endeavors, including performing magic tricks at a local restaurant, he later grew to love singing harmonies as a Baritone in his school choir. With the wisdom and diversification of age, he too attended Columbia College Chicago and received his BA in film direction, as he was already practicing music in his spare time. Just blocks away and running in the same circles, these two astoundingly still hadn’t crossed paths. Mike moved to Los Angeles at the age of 21 and began pursuing what made him most complete. He began performing in multiple bands playing a full range of instruments, from drums to rhythm and bass guitar. Although, as he grew frustrated with musical differences, Mike set out to find someone to create the music he dreamed of. When he came across a cover song Nikki posted, he knew he’d heard exactly what he was looking for. His influences include: The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Neil Young, and Michael Jackson By Joseph Mireles Los Angeles based Folk/Americana Duo www.thecrowandthecanary.com
