About Sajid Wajid

Calling them ‘descendants’ of a royal family of renowned musicians, would not be wrong thing to say. Hailing from the famous Kirana Gharana and Punjab Gharana, that has been associated and appreciated for over a hundred years at the highest levels by music connoisseurs, music director duo of Bollywood, Sajid-Wajid have music in their blood. Their maternal grandfather, Ustad Faiyyaz Ahmed Khan Saab was the recipient of the Padma Shri whilst grand uncle, Ustad Niyaz Ahmed Khan Saab was the recipient of the prestigious Tansen award. Together these two sage’s were responsible for grooming Khaiyyam, Asha Bhosle, Mahendra Kapoor, Pamela Chopra, Sulakshana Pandit, Shabana Azmi, Talat Aziz, Sonali Rathod, Nitin Mukesh and countless others. Their paternal grandfather, Ustad Abdul Latif Khan Saab was born and trained in Peshawar to the nuances of tabla, while their father, Ustad Sharafat Ali Khan Saab is a well known tabla maestro. The Indian film industry owes some of its best compositions to this man, whose hands have lent magic to innumerable chartbusters for over 40 years. Despite their strong ‘in-house’ influences, Ustad Sharafat Ali Khan Saab ensured his sons be trained, polished and guided by an array of teachers who could add their knowledge to the comprehensive grooming of his sons. Elder brother Sajid, fascinated by the sound and rhythm of the tabla from a very young age, was tutored by the legendary Late Ustad Alla Rakha Khan Saab; and Wajid with his undying passion for strings became a disciple of one of India’s finest guitarists, Das Babu. Combining an illustrious family background with an intricate learned knowledge of music; Sajid-Wajid’s ability to innovate with music and bring the best of classical and western music together, have made them an unbeatable force in the world of music today. Having entered the arena of the Indian film industry, they started creating waves from the moment they set foot. Their debut album ‘Deewana’ (with Sonu Nigam), is credited with being the biggest selling basic music album in Indian music history. This was immediately followed by the conceptualization of the 28 Non Stop remix album for T-Series. Their compositions for Marhaba with the ‘descendants’ of Mian Tansen – the Sabri Brothers (who incidentally are also related to them) – clearly elevated them to an incomparable level in terms of melody, quality and style. Sajid-Wajid’s eagerness to experiment with new music forms and create unconventional melodies, makes them one of the most sought after music directors today. A team that consistently continues to bag awards every year, some of their film compositions include the likes of Main Tera Hero, Rowdy Rathode, Housefull 2, Ek Tha Tiger, Dabangg 2, Dabbang, Veer, Partner, Wanted, Kismet Konnection, Mujhse Shaadi Karoge, Killer, Hello Brother, Pyar Kiya Toh Darna Kya and many more. While the nation continues to croon to their music, Sajid has further dared to venture into the world of acting and already accomplished a few successful stints, while Wajid has taken on the extra mantle of being the singing voice of superstar Salman Khan.
