Not everyone in the audience was a guitar geek. Some of us have followed Richard Thompson since “Shoot out the Lights”, and we were there to hear him play from his very big playbook. He seemed more interested in showcasing his most impressive guitar skills with many guitar solos and even a song about his guitar heros, which provided another platform to further convince us of his immense and genius skills. While this may sound like a criticism, it’s only partially so. Who wouldn’t be awestruck watching and listening to him play? How is it possible to have the same strong voice he had 40 years ago? And how in the world is he physically capable of playing that guitar like some 20 year old prodigy? It boggles the mind. Truly. So for all those guitar geeks in the audience- you had a stellar night. The rest of us were mighty impressed but wanted more of what made us love him so many years ago. I get it, it’s hard to strike a balance. I liked the new stuff, it’s just that I felt like RT was trying too hard to convince us of something we already knew. Therefore, overkill on the guitar solos is why it was a 31/2 star show.

As always, Richard pulled off a dynamo electric eclectic show. Fine seletion of old favorites like 56Vincent and Beeswing, plus great new selections off latest album Three Rivers. Anyone who loves fine guitar and gorgeous songwriting should catch his next visit.

This is the umpteenth time (give or take an ump or two) that we have seen Richard Thompson, including his stint with the original Fairports with Sandy Denny. All I can say (and I can speak for my wife too) is that he gets better. His voice is magnificent, his guitar playing endlessly inventive and thrilling, and his storytelling compositions emotionally engaging and satisfying. His melodic sense and the chord changes he uses - fresh and complex. We are going to try to see him again in LA. Oh, and hats off to drums and bass too!

I wasn’t the oldest attendee, for once. Yay! Thalia Hall did a terrific job, adding floor seating, which I’ve not seen at the 3 other performances I attended.

Solid as ever. Personally, I wish they played fewer songs from the new album. Haven’t listened to it enough, I guess. Love the old stuff too much to miss any of it.
