Excellent show with a mixture of old and new tunes with some surprising choices from the RT repertoire. Particularly liked the cover version of The Byrds' Bells of Rhymney and The Band's The Weight. His grandson on rhythm guitar was impressive too. A solid 2 hour set with RT's eclectic humour punctuating the proceedings. A totally enjoyable concert for both the old hardcore RT fan and for more recent ones.

This was my first time at Revolution Hall, and I loved it. Brought back lots of high school theater/music memories. Acoustics and lights were great, loved that there were balconies. I've been listening to RT since about 1989, and this was the first time I saw him perform. The band dynamics were great, everyone was relaxed and had fun, and of course, the musicianship was awesome.

Town Hall is a lovely venue, and Richard Thompson did a fantastic show. It was something of a family gathering - his grandson played guitar on several songs (and seemed to have inherited the guitar hero gene) and his son Teddy Thompson got up for a couple of fantastic songs. The high point for me was his solo rendition of "1952 Vincent Black Lightning", which I have heard him play hundreds of times, but never better than Friday night. I was mildly disappointed that we didn't get to hear "Dimming of the Day" or "Beeswing", but they were there to flog a new album so I understood. The opening act was delightful - Kacy and Clayton, a duo from Saskatchewan Canada. They had beautiful harmonies backed with intricate and resonant tw0-guitar arrangements. She did most of the talking between songs and she was hilarious in a small-town deadpan way.

About Richard Thompson

“The Finest rock songwriter after Dylan and the best electric guitarist since Hendrix.” — LA Times “A folksinger who (shreds) like an arena-rock star… and still writes songs that sting and storm.” – NPR Named by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the Top 20 Guitarists of All Time, Richard Thompson is also one of the world’s most critically acclaimed and prolific songwriters. He has received Lifetime Achievement Awards for Songwriting on both sides of the Atlantic- from the Americanas in Nashville to Britain’s BBC Awards, and the prestigious Ivor Novellos. In 2011 Thompson was the recipient of the OBE (Order of the British Empire) personally bestowed upon him by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace. Most recently he was nominated for “Artist of the Year” by the Americana Music Honors & Awards. Having co-founded the groundbreaking group Fairport Convention as a teenager in the 60’s, Richard Thompson and his mates virtually invented British Folk Rock. By the age of 21 he left the band to pursue his own career, followed by a decade long musical partnership with his then-wife Linda, to over 30 years as a highly successful solo artist. A wide range of musicians have recorded Thompson’s music including Robert Plant, Elvis Costello, REM, Del McCoury, Bonnie Raitt, Los Lobos, David Byrne, Don Henley and many others. Thompson’s massive body of work includes over 40 albums, many Grammy nominations, as well as numerous soundtracks, including Werner Herzog’s Grizzly Man. His most recent CD, Electric, was produced by the great Nashville musician Buddy Miller (Band of Joy, Patty Griffin.). Electric continues to receive positive praise with Rolling Stone declaring, “…the excellence is undeniable.” This year saw Richard Thompson headlining dates around the world as well as co-headlining shows with Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell. Thompson and his band joined the Americanarama Tour sharing the stage with Bob Dylan, Wilco, and My Morning Jacket culminating with Dylan himself covering RT’s classic song “’1952 Vincent Black Lightning”. Thompson’s genre defying mastery of both acoustic and electric guitar along with dizzying energy and onstage wit continue to earn Richard Thompson massive new fans and a place as one of the most distinctive virtuosos in folk rock history. “Genius appears early. Legends are earned. But history’s greatest never stand on their laurels. This is the artistic arc for Richard Thompson!” "Richard Thompson has been called the finest rock songwriter after Bob Dylan and the best electric guitarist since Jimi Hendrix." Scott Timberg, L.A. Times
