It was an intimate performance by Chad VanGaalen. Dallas was very lucky to receive him for his first, and perhaps last visit to Texas. He played the set solo, the first time in several years. My brother, my friend, and I had the pleasure of chatting and drinking beers with him for well over an hour before his set, and he was so kind and funny. As he played his set in the courtyard behind the Nasher, acorns occasionally fell from the overhanging tree branches onto the stage, and onto Chad and his drums. He had set up a sampler to accompany him during some songs, but I think there was a technical issue causing the volume to be faint, so it was mostly unused. His vocals sounded as beautiful and haunting as ever, and some of us in the crowd did our best to sing the myriad harmonies we'd grown to know and love for songs like 'Willow Tree'. After the show, Chad took the time to speak with every single person who stayed around to meet him. My companions and I hung around until the end, to say our goodbyes and take a group photo. Chad, being quite tall, took the initiative to squat down a bit, and we gathered around him. We got a great group photo! I took a few videos that I will be uploading to YouTube over the next few days for those interested.
