About JGE Retro
JGE Retro is a hip-hop duo hailing from St. Louis, Missouri. The duo is made up of artists Lil Shawn and Shad, and is part of the larger independent record label “JGE” (Jackie Gabrielle Entertainment.) The duo gets the JGE Retro name from their common love of retro shoes and clothing. While Lil Shawn and Shad take on the retro name, it is clear that these two young artists share a lot more than just a love of old clothing. Instead, they share a vision.
Growing up, Lil Shawn and Shad were surrounded by the music industry. Not only did they grow up during a prominent period in St. Louis’ hip-hop scene, but also were born into a legacy of hip-hop. Lil Shawn is the nephew of the famous rapper Nelly, and Shad is the son of Nelly’s former manager, Tony “T-Luv” Davis. As a result, these two artists inherited the talent of their relatives, and began making music at an early age. Lil Shawn recorded his first song at the age of 11 and started a musical act with his cousin. Shad also started early, and has now been making music for over 13 years. As they have gotten older, they have each grown to appreciate music that is unique and creative. While they grew up at the height of St. Louis’ hip-hop culture, they now have decided to stray away from other current sounds coming out of the city, because they feel the trap genre has grown too generic.
Instead, JGE Retro is centered on the vision of creating unique music. Right now, they are focused on producing songs that are meant to be fun and exciting, and that talk about relationships and emotion. Through their shared work ethic and powerful drive, these young artists have overcome numerous setbacks and have already begun to create a name for themselves. They received a major breakthrough after being featured on BET’s “Nellyville,” which documented the behind the scenes life of their relative Nelly.
Having known each other their whole lives, Shad and Lil Shawn are the perfect musical duo. They both bring something extra to the table with their hardworking and persevering mentalities. Neither of them will stop until JGE Retro is a household name. In the next few months JGE Retro hopes to release their latest single “Monopoly$.” They also are in the process of working on an upcoming project, titled “Late 2 Class.” For fans, this means there is a whole lot of good music yet to come from this young and energetic duo!
