Sleepy Wonder & Geometric Echoes

Sleepy Wonder began his career in the dancehall grabbing the microphone at dances such as: ‘Sugar Minott's Youthman Promotion Soundsystem,’ ‘Gemini,’ and ‘Shocking Vibes.’ In 1984 he migrated to the USA where he joined various sound systems including ‘Mini Mart Hi Power’ and ‘Third World.’ He truly came into his own later in the decade, recording hard-edge, digital dancehall for the Brooklyn based Park Heights imprint and for Lloyd Barnes’ vaunted Bullwackies label. By 1988 he had embarked on a recording career with Delroy Francis and released the celebratory ‘88 Champion’ and ‘Fade Away’. The success of the latter resulted in an international tour. After achieving critical acclaim on tour, Sleepy Wonder returned to New York City where he wrote and produced ‘Break Up To Make Up’ for Shelly Thunder. In the mid-90s Sleepy Wonder performed alongside Shinehead on the DJs major label release: Troddin’. Sleepy Wonder also linked up with Arrow adding a dancehall flavor to his calypso-styled ‘Soca Pepper Seed’. It was around this time that he recorded in combination with Bobo General for the assertive ‘My Sound,’ that has since become a dancehall anthem. In 1995, Sleepy Wonder diversified into hip-hop with the notorious east coast producer Chuck ‘Chillout.’ With Chuck he appeared on the Phat Wax label and released the New York chart-topper ‘Rookie,’ aimed at newcomers to the industry who showed little or no respect to the originators of the music. In 1997 Sleepy Wonder performed alongside the Born Jamericans for their hit ‘Gotta Get Mine,’ featuring Mad Lion and Shinehead. By the close of the 90s Sleepy Wonder’s association with Shinehead led the duo to set up the label ‘No Choice Music Group.’ 1999 brought Sleepy Wonder into his collaboration with international downtempo champions Thievery Corporation, which lead him to becoming a full time member. Having criss-crossed the Americas for over a decade with them, he has brought his “speed rappin’ dancehall style" to soon to be classics: ‘Radio Retaliation,’ ‘Warning Shots,’ and ‘State of the Union.’ Meanwhile 2009 brought out his release ‘Injustice’ which contained roots and dancehall songs such as: ‘March into the Hills,’ ‘DJ Business,’ and the title track Injustice.’ Early 2013 saw his most recent album Geometric Echoes that contains spacious digital dancehall tracks, as well as drum and bass and industrial tracks. Highlights include ‘Big in a Body,’ ‘My Vibes,’ and once again the crushing title track ‘Geometric Echoes.’ Grammy nominated for his work with Thievery Corporation, ‘Radio retaliation,’ 4 time producer of the year, 2 times album of the year, and Reggae Ambassador for VRA awards, Sleepy Wonder is THE dancehall and reggae artist from the 80s till now.
