About Tovi

TOVI (pronounced toe-vee) is the electropop project of Red Deer, Alberta based artist Rebecca Emms. Drawing influence from Portishead and Gorillaz’s trip hop style to alt-pop icons like Lana Del Rey and Lorde, TOVI’s debut solo EP Midnight Hum sonically delivers a hazy dream-like atmosphere of warm vintage synths, sultry vocals matched with deep bass rumbles and programmed beats.

After a split from her previous band Girl Meets Bear, Emms started putting together song ideas for her debut solo EP Midnight Hum in late 2016. Striking lyrical self-reflections of fear and desire; the EP is draped with dark apocalyptic tones, lined with glimmering hints of optimism. Teaming up with recording engineer/producer Mike Rocha (Electric Youth, Greys, Black Pistol Fire), the EP’s four tracks were recorded in a downtown Toronto studio over a two week span, in the muggy heat of July 2017.

Midnight Hum debuted at no. 4 on the !earshot National Electronic radio charts and has been nominated for a Western Canadian Music Award.
