About Raglan Road

Advance Notice: Raglan Road 28 year Reunion Concert, Saturday July 11, 2015 at Petersham Bowling Club. Raglan Road was formed in 1974 and last played in 1987. By the early 80s it was clearly established as one of Australia’s leading folk/acoustic bands. Raglan Road then toured with the Dubliners, Christy Moore, the Fureys, Stockton’s Wing, Mary Black, Paddy Reilly and many other international performers. At their own long resident gigs in Sydney they hosted; Ralph McTell, Eric Bogle, Doug Ashdown & Bernard Bolan as well as, in the folk tradition, many aspiring young performers . Thirty years ago, Sydney folk music was at its peak, and atop that peak, was Raglan Road. Their music is folk, but in the widest sense – Irish, English, Scots, Australian for sure, but also plenty of their own originals, Dylan, Ochs and many others. The five part harmonies & a-cappella, the powerful vocals and the gifted, diverse instrumentation must be heard to be believed! In its 13 years Raglan Road released two singles and three LPs. It performed at the Sydney Entertainment Center, Sydney Opera House, Sydney Town Hall, State Theatre and the Port Fairy Folk Festival. Always hard working and in demand, the band consistently played twice weekly and often more in Sydney pubs and clubs with longer than two year residencies at the Rose, Shamrock & Thistle (the “3 Weeds”), the White Horse Hotel Surrey Hills and the Sydney Gaelic Club. Band members; Anna Brown (vocals, flute, whistle, saxophone, percussion), Martin Doherty (vocals, 6 string guitar, bodhran), Jim Donnelly (vocals, harmonica, 12 string guitar), Tony Hystek (vocals, upright and electric bass, cello), and Kirsty McCallum (vocals, violin, keyboard), are looking forward to playing together again and to meeting up with old friends for this once only reunion.
