About The Crooked Road Ceili Band

JULIE HORNER - Hammered dulcimer, fiddle, bodhran, vocals Julie Horner brings an infectious energy to the music, and the hammer dulcimer strikes a steady, melodic tempo to lift the spirits and soothe the soul. In 2004 Julie founded and continues to lead a traditional Irish seisiun every Tuesday night at O'Flaherty's Irish Pub in downtown San Jose. She also co-hosts a traditional Irish seisiun with David Chadwick every Sunday at the Poet & Patriot in downtown Santa Cruz. Julie is a member of The Crooked Road, a San Francisco-based dance band with Jack Gilder, David Chadwick, and Doug Lowder. Julie is also a member of The Pure Drops traditional Irish band with Suzuki Cady, Daniel Schoenfeld, and David Chadwick based in Marin County. Julie also Irish set and step dances and is a regular English Country dancer and a recovering Scottish Country dancer. Julie began her performing career at age 8 studying piano with concert pianist, Gladys Lawlor. She began singing and dancing with the San Jose Children's Musical Theater (now Children's Musical Theater San Jose), lead by the late John P. Healy, Jr. and continued to perform on stage in musicals and in choral groups throughout her teens and 20s. Julie studied radio broadcasting at SJSU, ran a death metal program called "Brain Pain" on KSJS, earned her BA in Radio/Television/Film, and spent nearly a decade as an on-air personality on the Monterey Peninsula with KMBY in Monterey and KRQC in Salinas. Julie is a technical writer in Silicon Valley and writes a local music column for the Santa Cruz Mountain Bulletin. DAVID CHADWICK - Fiddle, tenor banjo, mandolin, guitar David Chadwick plays Irish fiddle and mandolin and is an expert DADGAD-tuned guitar player. He also plays the tenor or "Irish" banjo, which has four strings instead of five like you'd find in most American style banjos. David has a huge repertoire of Irish tunes, and he and Julie together provide hours of lively music-making at seisions and performances! With a degree in music from Cabrillo College and trained as a classical guitarist, David plays a broad range of music from all over the world. David is also a member of The Crooked Road, a dance band with Jack Gilder, Julie Horner, and Doug Lowder and is also a member of The Pure Drops Irish band with Suzuki Cady, Daniel Schoenfeld, and Julie Horner. David co-hosts the traditional Irish seisiun at O'Flaherty's Irish Pub every Tuesday night in downtown San Jose and at the Poet & Patriot every Sunday in downtown Santa Cruz. When not playing Irish music, David is a professional landscaper and fiddle teacher in the Santa Cruz area. KEN BEWICK - Guitar, vocals Ken Bewick is a guitarist, singer, recording artist, and songwriter based in Santa Cruz, California, and has been writing, playing and performing for more than 25 years. Along with guitar and vocals, Ken also plays trumpet, bass, drums and percussion and his interest in music spans all genres and eras. Ken has played and performed on his own, with the Santa Cruz band, "Mudfrog," Boston-based "Classical Tangent," and most recently produced two CDs as “Bottle of Sound.” His recent projects include CDs recorded with the group "Frame" and "Musical Tangent," both based in the Boston area. He has played support for many artists, including T-Bone Burnett, Cowboy Junkies, Seals and Crofts, Sam Phillips, Hot Tuna, and Leon Russell. He has scored and produced music for live dance ensemble, film, and commercial audio projects. Ken is an electrical engineer in the Santa Cruz area and is active writing and performing original music for the Cabrillo College dance department. Stompin' Irish - Fresh acoustic folk in the spirit of the tradition!
