About Matthew Armitage
Matthew Armitage is an accomplished multi instrumentalist, songwriter and singer from New Zealand, who has worked with a broad mix of bands throughout his early career, some taking him to live in Berlin and New York.
Armitage followed his heart and relocated to Northern NSW, Australia in 2013, quickly finding his feet as solo bluesman amongst the eclectic and thriving music scene of Byron Bay. He released his first EP ‘Over Oceans’, in 2014 which merges raw garage blues, South Pacific soul and mellow psychedelia, showcasing Armitage's first chapter as a solo musician. Standout track is 'Calm down' with its melodic guitar and chill vibes with a video to match by multi award winning Gold Coast photographer, Trent Mitchell.
2015-2017 saw Armitage gig full time, become a dad and record his first studio album, and he also kept up momentum with his two bands- popular Byron Bay 60's cult Hollywood, surf, jive and blues duo ‘The Swamps’ and ‘Chesta Hedron’, an all original, instrumental, heavy psych, kraut rock duo who released a 5 track EP ‘Infinite Nought’ April 2016 with an epic video by Dr D Foothead for ‘Hash Monster’.
In June 2018 Armitage released his first studio album ‘New Tide’ and toured it around Australia alongside songwriting legend Pete Murray.
December 2023 saw the release of his second studio album ‘Back to the Flow’.
Over a decade later you’ll find Armitage still residing in the northern rivers with his family and sharing his unique musical talent up and down the east coast.
