About Simahlak
Simahlak became immersed in the Hip-Hop culture at a very young age, when Ma Dukes presented him his first record, "Adventures of Super Rhymes" by Jimmy Spicer. He began to DJ in '87 with DJ mobiles, doing high school parties and bar mitzvahs. Around that time, he got into doing "Pause Tapes" which eventually lead to his love for making beats/music production. He worked as a radio DJ for three years at Vanier College (Montreal, Canada), breaking in records which he felt were overlooked and deserved to be heard. Continuing in his taste maker tradition, Simahlak has since been a hiphop buyer/manager for several major hiphop stores in Montreal including: Tabou, Science, Noize and Disques Zulu. Simahlak released his first official mixed cd, "Who's Your Daddy Vol.1" (Feat. DJ- A-Trak, Necro, King Skinny Pimp) through Audio Research/Fat Beats - making him the first and only Canadian DJ to have his mixed CD distributed by world reknown Fat Beats Distribution. As part of the Brass Knuckles Crew, he premiered the first original breaks/hiphop night in Montreal that ran for five years strong, making it the longest ongoing club night/residencies in the city. Simahlak also made headlines as being the first hip-hop DJ to partake in the prestigious Montreal Jazz Festival.
Simahlak has positioned himself a residential spot as DJ and in-house producer for Audio Research Records (home of the freshest), a Montreal based label founded by Dave 1 (Chromeo), A-Trak (Kanye West) and Willo (Eskimo Design). As a DJ/Producer/Artist, Simahlak has played his eclectic and personalized music sets alongside such acts as Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash, Devin The Dude, Little Brother, Masta Ace, Kid Koala, Madlib, Cut Chemist, Buck 65, The Lootpack, Beat Junkies, Mr.Complex, X-Ecutioners, Peanut Butter Wolf, J-Live, K-os, Lucy Pearl, Non Phixion and Blackalicious, just to name a few. Simahlak's production portfolio includes working with DJ A-Trak (Kanye West), Obscure Disorder, Moka Only, Sixtoo, 4th Pyramid, Eternia, Troy Dunnit, Muzion, Sans Pression, D-Shade and many more. Simahlak continues to contribute his emotionally driven, sonic backdrops with the relentless focus on being a house hold name worldwide while pursuing his ultimate goal of becoming a successful, well respected music Producer, DJ and Artist.
His Audio Research (www.audioresearch.net - 2001 - 2007) family has also been merited as being the "Next 100" according to URB magazine in 2003. Simahlak has also done extensive UK and Euro Touring with Audio Research alongside DJ A-Trak (Kanye West) and labelmate DJ Serious in support of the 2003 seminal release of "Rugged Radio Saturday", a highly acclaimed and praised release mixed by world renowned DJ Champion DJ Craze. This Audio Research Compilation also featured such hip-hop luminaries such as DJ A-Trak (Kanye West), DJ Q-Bert and D-Styles (Invisbl Skratch Picklz), DJ Babu (Dilated Peoples, Beat Junkies), Ill Bill (Non Phixion, La Coka Nostra), and Necro (Phycho+Logical Records). Simahlak has also occupied the role of A'n'R on Audio Research Records, involving projects for an all Cancon Compilation released on Audio Research/Universal Canada/Under Pressure in which he scored an accompanying 45 minute DVD Soundtrack documenting the 10 year anniversary of Montreal's annual Graffiti Event, Under Pressure.
Simahlak won a Felix Award (Quebec version of the Grammy's) for his production on Muzion's single/video "C'est Pas Un Hasard", another for his work with Sans Pression "Souverain Dans Le Sousterain" and has been nominated by "Le Gala Hiphop Montreal Underground" in the category of "2005 Best Producer". Also in 2005, Simahlak's production on Eternia's "It's Called Life" (tracks "Time", "Inspriration" and "Family") - Urbnet, garnered his first Juno Award Nomination in the category for "Best Canadian Rap Album".
Simahlak has also taken on duties as an in-house producer at "boutique" indie label, Bully Records (distributed by Ninjatune), acclaimed 2004 Noise Makers according to The Montreal Mirror. Simahlak's EP "Son Of Sakuraba" was released in early 2006 on Bully Records (www.bullyrecords.com), marking his instrumental debut, indicative of much more material to come in the near future. His "Son Of Sakuraba" debut combined his love for composing Musique Concrete (utilizing reel to reel analog tape manipulation) coupled with his trademark raw boom-bap, low-fi esthetic to bring forth an intense, ominous and beautifully ugly skitzophrenic mind world in the form of a limited 1000 pressings of 7-inch vinyl . In addition, Simahlak provided an original music score for the film, "Dead Space" (released late 2006 on Bully Records/Projects) documenting the life of veteran Parisian graffiti writer Psyckoze and his experience in the city's catacombs over the last 22 years.
Simahlak has been in worldwide publications such as: The Source Magazine, Blaze, URB, Mass Appeal, Vice, Big Daddy, Elemental, Magazine, Exclaim, The Montreal Gazette, The Montreal Mirror, Pound Magazine, Capital magazine, Eye, Now Toronto, Vinyl Magazine, La Presse, Le Devoir, The Hour, Under Pressure Magazine, Wired
