About Xara Choral Theatre

Xara Choral Theatre Society is dedicated to the development of their emerging art form in Nova Scotia and Canada. The projects and events they offer have a dual focus on professional level choral theatre performances and education for artistic development and social change. The flagship performance group of the society, Xara Choral Theatre Ensemble (established in 2008 and known as Camerata Xara Young Women’s Choir until July, 2013), is an auditioned collective of up to twenty-four young women ages 18-30. Facilitated by artistic directors Christina Murray and Claire Leger, the ensemble creates stories, myths, and aesthetic experiences through a rich tapestry of challenging choral repertoire, choral movement, lighting, spoken word, and visual elements. The organization also offers a training ensemble for girls ages 14-18 called Xara Youth Ensemble. This vibrant group is a strong, supportive community striving for artistic excellence. Xara’s innovative approach has consistently attracted large audiences and critical acclaim. The lead ensemble has frequently appeared at high profile civic events and was proud to represent Canada at the international choral meet, Festival 500, in 2011. Xara also undertakes a number of smaller performances throughout the year and has played across Nova Scotia including shows in Wolfville, Annapolis Royal, Shelburne, Truro, Liverpool, Mahone Bay, and Saint Bernard. Xara’s work in the inter-arts genre choral theatre is fast gaining national and international recognition. North American leaders in this field, their sung stories are a feast for the senses and heart-felt explorations of identity, community, and culture. Young women singing stories through contemporary choral repertoire, movement, and theatre.
