An early influence on early Rock and Roll, in the late 40's and early 50's this singer/pianist recorded a string of R&B hits including "Driftin' Blues", "Merry Christmas Baby", "Trouble Blues", "Please Come Home for Christmas" and "Black Night". Ray Charles has cited him as a major influence. In 1997, he was awarded a National Heritage Fellowship by the National Endowment for the Arts at a White House ceremony. In 1999 he was inducted into the Rock & Roll hall of fame.
