About Jason Keary

Jason Keary will release a new EP entitled “Another Bird Here Has Flown" in the summer of 2013. It will prove to be a massive leap forward creatively in a very short period of time. Keary abandoned the soaring guitars and massive drums of his youth resulting in a more refined, classic sound. The radically different sound unearthed on "Another Bird Here Has Flown" is due in part to Keary himself being in the producer’s chair. “I wanted to produce the record myself; my way. Right or wrong." Keary says. “I have been so fortunate to have had the chance to work with and learn from some great producers in my short time doing this so I felt it was time for me to apply what I had learned." Keary recruited his go-to players as well as partnered up with mix engineer Clay Jones of Modest Mouse, Elvis Costello and Counting Crows fame to mix the record. Keary also implored the ears of renowned mastering engineer Noah Mintz who has worked with artists such as The National, Stars and Broken Social Scene. The opening track entitled “This Is Love" calls out to the ghost of John Lennon; infused with lush strings and piano. “Being a guitar player, I wanted to write a record that didn’t solely rely on the guitar as the main instrument. I wanted the piano and strings to be as much a focal point as the guitar." Keary himself also handled all guitar and piano work on the album. The second track "Halcyon" reveals itself as a man being enamored to the point of being haunted by a woman he loves while the achingly beautiful “Watch You Break" documents the disintegration of a relationship and way of life. “Writing that song taught me a lot. I wrote it while living alone in my tiny rental house with no central heat. I think of it as the highest low point of my decision to try to write music for a living." Keary laughs. “At the time I thought I was writing it about someone else but looking back I was also writing it about myself. I was making the choice to keep on going. Heartbreak is a thread that ties us all together and being able to write objectively about my life gave me the confidence I needed to keep on doing what I do. For that, I will always be grateful for the experience that gave birth to that song." says Keary. After the heaviness of “Watch You Break" the album reaches it’s lightest point with the light-hearted “Love Shines Through". Keary describes the song as a love letter of sorts to his closest friends. “I was raised an only child in the deep south. As you can imagine, there wasn’t that much to do. Not having the companionship of siblings instilled a deep love and affection for my friends. I’ve always been blessed with great friends. When I was in college we had this great house in Oxford, MS simply known as “803". I would be lying if I said we didn’t have our fair share of parties there when we maybe should have been studying. We would yell… Not sing… But literally yell along with songs we loved at the top of our lungs. I wanted to write a song with the catchiest chorus I could muster; that I could hear my friends and I singing along to. It’s really more of a thank you to all of the people who have stuck by me through the years." The album closes with the title track; “Another Bird Here Has Flown". Keary had his late grandmother in mind as the inspiration for the delicate ending to the album. “She would sit down with me at the piano when I was a baby to play and sing songs with me. She’s been gone a few years now but it really only recently occurred to me that she was one of the main reasons I started singing and playing music in the first place. I never really thought about it. It’s just what I do. But I suppose the spark has to come from somewhere." he says. "Another Bird Here Has Flown" will be available on July 30, 2013.
