Alan Chan’s music often takes inspiration from his life experiences as a resident in America, East Asia and Europe. His genre-shaking music has been recognized with awards and fellowships from ASCAP, American Composers Forum, New Music USA, the Ucross Foundation, Percussive Arts Society and Los Angeles County Arts Commission, among others.

Winner of the 2015 ASCAP/George Duke Commissioning Prize and 2011 ArtEZ Jazz Composition Contest in the Netherlands, he founded the 17-piece Alan Chan Jazz Orchestra (ACJO), which comprised of top studio/jazz musicians in Los Angeles. Under his direction, ACJO has performed at the Catalina Jazz Club, Lighthouse Café, Typhoon, Vitello’s, as well as the El Camino Main Stage series. In 2014, they released their debut "Shrimp Tale" album, which was well-received from critics with 10 reviews, and with over 70 radio play across the U.S. and abroad, including the syndicated Jazz After Hours by Jim Wilke on Public Radio International. It was named on of “My Favorite Album 2014” on Jazz Critique Magazine in Japan.

Coming from a classical background, he began composing for jazz big band under the mentorship of Gary Lindsay in Miami, then Vince Mendoza and Shelly Berg in Los Angeles and Jim McNeely at the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop in New York City, where he built a substantial body of work for jazz orchestra.

His music have been performed by Symphonic Jazz Orchestra (Los Angeles), the Brussels Jazz Orchestra, Millennium Jazz Orchestra (Netherlands), La Jolla Symphony, Taipei Percussion, sTop (Slovenia) and by college and high school big bands in Miami, Redlands, Medfield, MA and Los Angeles. He has served as a judge at the 2010 & 2015 PAS Composition Contest and 2011 SCI/ASCAP Student Commission Competition, and held teaching positions at University of Southern California and University of Redlands. He is currently Instructor of Applied Music (Jazz) and Music Director of Concert Jazz Band at El Camino College in Torrance, California.
