About Not Good With Horses
Not Good With Horses is a semi acoustic indie folk/Americana five piece band from Sydney, Australia, who were forged together to forever roam the fertile borderlands of where old time country, bluegrass and blues collides with contemporary folk, rock, and a new kind of new singer/songwriter tradition. Artists like Michael Nesmith and Gram Parsons were early trail blazers into this musical frontier, but the likes of The Cowboy Junkies, Ryan Adams, Paul Kelly, and Gillian Welch would be considered much more as influences.
Singer Brielle Davis and guitarist Graham Walshe write the bands original material, with the rest of the repertoire a grab-bag of covers and re-interpreted pieces by people as diverse as Nick Cave, Justin Townes Earl, Pat Boone, and Eddy Cochran.
The rhythm section of Brendan ‘Porter’ Pace (double bass) and percussionist Neville Anderson (snare and brushes) provides a tight and solid foundation for Walshe’s guitar and banjo styling, and the lush husky tone of Brielle Davis’ voice. With the addition of talented newcomer, guitarist Dan Babekuhl (from bluegrass hotshots Oh Willie Dear), Not Good With Horses is now complete.
The Not Good With Horses sound is quite spare, or “stripped back” if you will, and yet at times they can be powerful and mesmerising. Sometimes jaunty, sometimes brooding and introspective, a night spent enjoying their music will be an experience to stagger and a swing to a sound that is all their own.
Currently finalising their debut album with producer Brendon Gallagher (Karma County, Jimmy Little), Not Good With Horses is a staple on the Sydney’s live music scene and has a strong following who is eager to see them perform live, as they are to hear the bands album which currently is slated for release late in mid 2017 through Compadre Music. Upon release, listeners will be treated to share in what will be a wonderful snapshot of a band just beginning to find their feet, but brimming with potential.
