About D.B Cohen
DB Cohen's sound can be described 'As a cross between Bob Dylan, Ray Davies, Madness,The Stones and Two Tone Ska'.
During four years in Japan, Dan started writing songs on his acoustic guitar and soon formed the band 'The Dogz Bollox' playing Japanese 'gaijin life' inspired songs and velvet underground covers. Consisting of Canadian expat teachers they played the clubs of Numazu and Tokyo learning all the while. Nine years travelling Asia and the South Pacific gave DB plenty to write about, and when he returned to London in 2008 he got to work on his first album.
But it was in the club Madame Jojo's, where Dan was lean enough to approach Snowboy one Friday at the Good Foot. He asked him to listen to a demo recorded with newly formed band 'The Dukes of Earl'. Good part was, Snowboy ended up producing DB's music. Bringing a wealth of knowledge and amazing musicians to DB Cohen's analog recorded debut album 'Scratchcards & Wine'.
The star studded studio team included; Florence and the machine bassist Mark Saunders and Rusty Bradshaw, Toby Gore, Mike Webster from 'Baddies' as well as Ladonna Harley-Peters (Adele & Emili Sande) He used the horn section from the Specials, as well as James Taylor Quartet's Gary Crockett, and rockabilly legend Steve Hooker. Blues harmonica player West Weston happens to feature on ‘The Boatman’ written for Welsh playwright Matthew Lewis.
The album 'Scratchcards & Wine' has since been championed by Gary Crowley on his Absolute and BBC new music shows. Title track 'Scratchcards' has had various international air play whilst ska edged track 'Dinner Party' was played on Eddie Piller's famous Modcast and BBC Introducing.
DB performed for 20,000 on the main stage at Southend's Village Green Festival in 2013 with nine piece band, and now plays on Helen Lederer's critically acclaimed W.T.F chat show. In August 2013 he headlined London's famous 100 Club and his arresting live performances on acoustic guitar and harmonica, with or without brass section, have earned him rave reviews. His recent BLOW UP records set at Peckham's bussey building was a riotous affair, and a UK tour is planned for 2014.
