About Trail Magic

In the harsh Appalachian wilderness, there is a term for a random, felicitous act of goodwill bestowed upon a weary traveller: Trail Magic. Trail Magic is never an accident. Trail Magic is an affirmation that there are millions of people in the world and you are one of them...and so am I. Trail Magic always requires a giver and a receiver. Trail Magic is a reminder that we are all on the same team. This project, as the name suggests, developed at a fortuitous time for both of its members. Following the dissolution of their previous band, Colorfeels, Taylor Zachry (bass, guitar, vocals) and Justin Maurer (keys, guitar, vocals) immediately began the search for their next musical outlet. After a month or so of casual musical meetups, the two had hit a creative stride and a new band was born. A shared appreciation for the balance between the purity of the musical experience and a “serious-but-not-too-serious” approach to lyric writing allowed the first batch of songs to develop rather quickly. Non-Traditional Folk Songs, Trail Magic’s first release, is the product of the first few months of writing between Zachry and Maurer and another couple of months in the studio (and Justin’s living room). For this record, the band has utilized a talented cast of musicians and engineers from the local Nashville music scene to create a textural journey through a wild musical landscape. For Maurer and Zachry, the album represents a history of past musical influence, and at the same time, a collection of musical prototypes representing an array of possible futures for the band. Trail Magic has already amassed a growing catalog of unrecorded material and plans to focus as much energy as possible into recording and releasing quality material as often as possible. You may catch Trail Magic playing live if you’re careful not to blink, but for all intents and purposes, Maurer and Zachry have begun an experiment in what it means to be a “studio band”. The new musical project from Taylor Zachry and Justin Maurer, purveyors of modern pop music.
