About Alkaloid
Alkaloid, the progressive extreme metal band featuring members from renowned groups like Triptykon, Obscura, Dark Fortress, and Obsidious, released their new album, "Numen" through Season of Mist in 2023. Comprised of Morean (vocals, guitars, concepts), Hannes Grossmann (drums), Christian Münzner (guitars), and Linus Klausenitzer (bass), the Germany-based quartet builds upon the foundations laid by their previous albums, "The Malkuth Grimoire" (2015) and "Liquid Anatomy" (2018), while delving deeper into their multidimensional blend of metallic genres.
Speaking about the band's evolution, Morean explains their departure from the confines of pure extreme metal, embracing a progressive approach that allows for a wider range of styles and influences. Despite incorporating melodies, clean guitars, and elements from other genres, Alkaloid remains rooted in the brutality and relentless aesthetic of extreme metal.
Formed in Bavaria in 2013, Alkaloid serves as a creative outlet for its members, offering limitless expression and a platform for exploring themes of cosmic horror and speculative fiction. Their lyrical content, often inspired by hard sci-fi and Lovecraftian themes, is as integral to their identity as their intricate musical compositions.
"Numen," written during the pandemic, reflects Alkaloid's resilience and adaptability in the face of adversity. Despite logistical challenges and the departure of a band member, the album's creation process remained steadfast, resulting in a cohesive and sophisticated body of work.
Thematically, "Numen" explores existential and metaphysical concepts, weaving together narratives of cosmic architecture, ancient deities, and the quest for divinity. From the philosophical reflections of "Clusterfuck" to the cosmic odyssey depicted in "Numen," each track offers a glimpse into Alkaloid's expansive universe.
Recorded individually due to pandemic restrictions, "Numen" was meticulously crafted by each member before being assembled and mixed by Hannes Grossmann. The album's sound is characterized by its intensity, complexity, and dynamic range, showcasing Alkaloid's mastery of their craft.
