About James Jean

James Jean is a singer-songwriter and performing artist from Austin, TX. James Jean's musicality draws inspiration from a broad spectrum of artists, songwriters and genres, leaning most heavily on classic influences and stylings, textures and tones that shaped the artist's songwriting. James Jean tunes feature creative nods to the music that shaped his life, employing elements of jazz, country, pop, R&B, alternative, Americana, folk and roots rock genres of the 1950s, 60s, 70s and 80s. James Jean lyrics are spiritually poetic and rooted in the art of story-telling.

James Jean began performing his original songs around Austin, TX in the early 1990s as a solo artist. In 2000, James formed the band Doxadeo with co-frontman/guitarist Nathan Brown, bassist Chris Heerlein (Wideawake, Live), and drummer Cory Heerlein. The group quickly wrote and self-produced the album Need in 2001.

James and Cory parted ways with Doxadeo to form James Jean Band with bassist Bob Kennedy. The trio released Come Broken (2003), Boundless (2004) and Better Things (2005), touring across the lower 48 states before disbanding in 2005.

After JJB, James stepped back from live performances to dedicate increased time to songwriting, creative refinement and exploration of new musical directions. In 2010, James developed a deep friendship with Shane Smith (Shane Smith & The Saints) which led to occasionally filling in on bass guitar in 2010-2011.

James returned to the stage as a solo artist following the release of his first full-length solo record Gimme Space (2016), and then the single Summerhead (2018), produced by Brian Douglas Phillips. James also collaborated with artist and producer Lang Freeman (Sounds Under Radio) to release Hole In My Pocket (2018), and Will You Come Over (2019).

James Jean released the album Well Played in March 2024, produced by longtime friend and guitarist, Jacob Hildebrand. The Well Played album features the amazing talents of Jacob Hildebrand on guitar, Fred Mandujano on drums/percussion (Steve Berlin, Radney Foster, David Ramirez, Aaron Lewis), and Sean Giddings on piano/keys (Christopher Cross, Alejandro Escobedo).
