About Pure Hell

PURE HELL is "The World's First Original All Black Punk Rock Band", established in Philadelphia, PA, in 1974, during the flashpoint of the punk culture in New York City, London and Los Angeles. In March and April 1975, the Patti Smith Group and Television played a two-month weekend residency at CBGB's. These performances made both the bands and the club a part of rock-n-roll history. That was in the begining of New York City's 'punk rock'-'new wave' era emerging simultaneous within the very same months that year when, the initial formation of PURE HELL holed up at the New York Dolls' rehearsal loft in the midst of their wreckage. With Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood assisting in an attempt to refurbish their career, a lot was learned and comprised in the design of the Sex Pistols when the duo returned to England. Amid the pioneers of the post garage, acid rock, glam-theatre era of the late 60's/early 70's, this band is considered the first of its kind, and comparable to the Sex Pistols, Dead Boys, The Germs, The MC 5 and Bad Brains, who recognize them as an influence. The release of a single in the UK- a cover of "These Boots are Made for Walking" w/B side, "No Rules"- they landed in the top 5 on the UK Alternative charts during their debut tour of Europe. However, their first album "NOISE ADDICTION," remained unreleased for 28 years & is now available in limited press. In 2016 the album's New York and London recorded tracks were reissued on Cherry Red Records UK [http://shop.cherryred.co.uk/shopexd.asp?id=5263]. Pure Hell touts a second unreleased album [conjured by Kenny Gordon and Michael Sanders] produced in the mid 1990's by former members of L.A. Guns, Nine Inch Nails, and Motorhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister, entitled THE BLACK BOX. Unfortunately the band endured the loss of founding member and drummer, Michael "SPIDER" Sanders, in 2002. Most recent live performances include select venues and events on the east coast, while contributing to countless book and magazine interviews that include a book based on their first manager - "Curtis Knight: Living In The Shadow Of Jimi Hendrix" by Kathy O'Connell and "A Vicious Love Story" by Teddie Dahlin - as well as documentaries and films. Notably directors; Alan Parker's "Who Killed Nancy" and Danny Garcia's "Looking for Johnny - the legend of Johnny Thunders (http://chipbakerfilms.com). Kenny Gordon has a book of his memoirs to be published by NEW HAVEN PUBLISHING LTD (http://newhavenpublishingltd.com/?page_id=411) in process. He was there with some of punk music culture's greatest. The story of PURE HELL, a first, an original... and it's not over...
