About Jim Moginie
Jim Moginie (Midnight Oil) has focused his intuitive composing and masterly guitar playing in this new work Murmurations. The first half of this intimate show is this piece in it’s entirety.
Inspired by a natural phenomenon that he witnessed in Ireland, the massive gatherings of starlings that occurs during winter evenings, this quiet music is played live and completely solo.
‘Murmurations - mesmerizing, image propagating, journey taking, captivating ... meditating. Mother Nature imagery. My brain was a kaleidoscope while listening.’ Justin Heitman, film maker
‘I personally love the album – the mood and atmosphere each ‘day of the week’ creates.’ Clay Doughty, Sony Music A&R
‘About time, to get a record that you can listen to over and over again.’ Christabel Blackman, artist
Moginie himself says of the performance: ‘Those random movements, sometimes repetitive, that in the language of a singular guitar I sought to echo nature. I flatter myself to think I could come close.’
Murmurations makes a hushed musical landscape for the mind to wander within, with a precision of playing that is somehow deliberate yet completely improvised, shifting from single notes to chords that tap out a rhythm that holds or dissipates. Ambient, jazz tinged, orchestral. The music challenges our imagination, beckoning it to explore diverse emotional terrains. The album was be released on April 28 digitally through Orchard and Sony Music and on CD through Reverberama Records..
The second half of the show will be Jim’s TipJar performance, again solo but based around the piano and other instruments.
Jim says ‘‘Early in 2020 when covid-19 hit, I recorded nearly 70 videos of songs solo, on piano or guitar called them my
TipJar songs, and posted them daily. Some I had written, others were covers, or written within Midnight Oil and with other people. Even though they were chosen randomly, they all had meaning and significance to me. This ‘two-up’ type of show reflects where I’m coming from artistically, with my passion for both the guitar and the piano, song craft and improvisation.
I’m happy to announce these intimate solo shows.
