About The Mavis's

The Mavis's formed in a country town called Ballarat outside Melbourne, Australia in 1987. Consisting of brother and sister Matt and Becki Thomas and school friends Andrea and Kath. Still underage they made their first recording appearances on Melbourne Underground compilations 'Screaming at the Mirror' volume 1 & 2. Then........ They were joined by Nick on guitar. In 1990 a debut indie single was recorded called 'ROLLERCOASTER'. 1992 a live ep called 'SPINDRIFT' was released. 1994 the ep 'POSEIDON' was released and and they were awarded an APRA songwriting award for the song 'ROCKETING'. By this time they had a growing cult following in the Melbourne pub scene.

In 1995 Josh took over on bass and they signed to Mushroom records and recorded the debut album 'VENUS RETURNING' which included the radio hit 'THUNDER' in 1996. 1997 they released thier second gold selling album 'PINK PILLS' which spawned the hits 'NAUGHTY BOY' and their gold selling hit 'CRY'. PINK PILLS entered the Australian charts at number 12 and the band was nominated for four ARIA AWARDS and won an APRA award for 'CRY'. They toured with Green Day & Kylie Minogue before taking a break to work on their third album. They also recorded WALK ON BY for the tribute album 'TO HAL AND BACHARACH' which reached number 1 on the Australian charts and PLANET EARTH for the Duran Duran tribute album UNDONE. The band worked with U.K/NY producer Mark Saunders [the Cure/Neneh Cherry/Tricky] on their third album 'RAPTURE' as well as co-writing one track with Jane Wiedlin and Charlotte Caffey from the Go-Go's.

Two top 40 sinlges 'COMING HOME' and 'HAPPINESS' were released but before the album came out....they disbanded in 2001. It was time for the members to spread thier artistic wings and fly seperately for a while. A Mavis's 'best of' was released called 'THROWING LITTLE STONES' and 'RAPTURE' was later released also. Members of the Mavis's can now be found in 'the B-dolls' [Andrea & Matt], Becki & the Bullets [Becki & Nick] MattDoll & Dirty South [Matt].
