This is the seventh time I’d seen the Names Hunter Six and the second time at the January Blues Festival at the venue 229. I got to the venue on time in the hope of securing a seat but wasn’t quick enough although there were more seats available this time at the sides of the venue.
The evening started off with a solo performance by Lucca Mae who did a great job getting the crowd going. Just her singing and playing guitar was intriguing and got engagement.
She was followed by Laura B and her Band who were great. She has a great stage presence and voice and her band were tip top. They had a real bluesy groove going on which reminded me of the Jools Holland Orchestra but smaller. I really enjoyed their set.
Finally at 9pm on came James Hunter Six and they went into their set with gusto playing songs from their new album and old favourites. He was on good form and had banter with the audience throughout.
There was a guitar strap malfunction where he was assisted by the bassist and then back into it full pelt again. After an hour of playing they took a break and then came back out and Lucca Mae joined for an encore on a softer ballad before they finished off with another couple of songs.
So all in all just over three hours of music with DJ Snowboy playing great tracks between the acts is really great value for money and I’ll be back again in the future.
